Athi Water Works Development Agency Athi Water Works Development Agency is a State Corporation under the Ministry of Water and Sanitation covering Nairobi, Kiambu and Murang'a Counties.

AWWDA draws its mandate from the Water Act of 2016. As per the Act, the Agencyโ€™s mandate include;
a. Undertaking the development, maintenance and management of National Public Waterworks;
b. Operate the waterworks and provide water services as a water service provider, until such a time as responsibility for the operation and management of waterworks are handed over to a county governmen

t, joint committee, authority of county government or water services provider,
c. Provide reserve capacity for purposes of providing water services where the Regulatory Board orders the transfer of water services functions from a defaulting water services provider to another licensee,
d. Provide technical services and capacity building to such county government and water providers,
e. Provide to the cabinet secretary technical support in discharge of his or her functions under the constitution the Water Act 2016.

The Athi Water Works Development Agency (AWWDA) today handed over the Kiracha Community Ablution Block to Limuru Water and Sewerage Company (LIWASCO), marking a key milestone in improving access to safe and dignified sanitation services for residents of the Kiracha informal settlement in Limuru, Kiambu County.

The project is expected to enhance public health by reducing waterborne diseases and improving the quality of life for the community. Before the handover, AWWDA, LIWASCO and the Kamae Community-Based Organization conducted a joint inspection of the facility to confirm its readiness for operation.

The handover underscores AWWDA's commitment to working with Water Service Providers and local communities to deliver sustainable sanitation infrastructure that improves livelihoods and promotes healthier communities.

Athi Water Works Development Agency has officially commenced preparations for the 2026 WASCO Games, with staff from the Headquarters, Karimenu II Bulk Water Supply System and the Northern Collector Tunnel (NCT) Bulk Water Supply System coming together for training sessions ahead of the annual competition.

The team was today taken through rigorous training drills at the NYS Grounds along Thika Road as preparations gather momentum. The session focused on enhancing physical fitness, teamwork and coordination as Athi Water gears up to compete across various sporting disciplines during the Games.

All members of staff are encouraged to join the training sessions and support Team Athi Water as we prepare to proudly represent the Agency at the 2026 WASCO Games happening in Kericho County from 10th to 14th August 2026.

The next training session will be held on Wednesday, 29 July 2026, at the NYS Grounds along Thika Road. We invite all staff to participate and cheer on the team as we build momentum towards a successful outing.

The Athi Water Works Development Agency (AWWDA) held Performance Contract negotiations with the Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation to agree on the Agency's performance targets for the Financial Year 2026/27 in line with the 23rd Performance Contracting Cycle Guidelines. The session brought together the AWWDA Board of Directors, Management, and Ministry officials to review and validate targets that will guide the Agency's operations and strategic priorities during the financial year.

The negotiations focused on aligning the proposed targets with AWWDA's mandate of developing and managing water and sanitation infrastructure. Discussions emphasized setting measurable, achievable, and results-oriented targets that will strengthen the delivery of quality, reliable, and sustainable water and sanitation services while improving access to essential services across the Agency's area of jurisdiction.

The engagement reaffirmed the shared commitment of the Ministry, the AWWDA Board, and Management to institutional excellence, accountability, and good governance. The agreed FY 2026/27 Performance Contract targets will serve as a framework for monitoring and evaluating the Agency's performance, supporting effective service delivery and the achievement of AWWDA's strategic objectives throughout the financial year.

Athi Water Works Development Agency is making significant progress in the implementation of the East and West Nairobi Reticulation Sewers Project under the Nairobi Rivers Basin Rehabilitation and Restoration Program Phase II.
With over 90% of the sewer network completed, the project is expanding access to safe and reliable sanitation services through the construction of nearly 88 kilometres of sewer lines and 3,000 household sewer connections across Karen, Utawala and Ruaka.
The project is also contributing to the restoration of the Nairobi Rivers by reducing wastewater pollution and improving environmental sustainability for present and future generations.

Staff from the Athi Water Works Development Agency (AWWDA) today undertook a site visit to the ongoing Gigiriโ€“Karura Bulk Water Supply Project, where pipe-laying works are currently underway near the Agency's headquarters. The visit, led by Eng. Kiprono and Ms. Loice Kamau, formed part of AWWDA's commitment to enhancing staff knowledge through practical exposure to the implementation of strategic water infrastructure projects.

During the visit, participants were taken through the various stages of pipeline installation, including trench excavation, pipe alignment, jointing, pressure testing, backfilling, and quality assurance procedures. The team also highlighted the engineering standards, construction methodologies, and occupational health and safety measures that guide the successful delivery of the project.

The visit provided staff with valuable first-hand insight into the implementation of the Gigiriโ€“Karura Bulk Water Supply Project, a strategic initiative aimed at strengthening Nairobi's bulk water transmission network and enhancing the reliability of water supply to the project's service areas. Participants also gained a deeper appreciation of the technical expertise, coordination, and planning involved in delivering large-scale water infrastructure.

Overall, the site visit reinforced AWWDA's commitment to continuous learning, staff capacity building, and knowledge sharing, while supporting the Agency's mandate of developing sustainable, resilient, and future-ready water infrastructure to improve access to reliable water services for communities across the region.

Athi Water Works Development Agency (AWWDA) today hosted the Nairobi City County Assembly Sectoral Committee on Water and Sanitation for a consultative engagement on the implementation of water infrastructure projects within Nairobi City County.

The meeting brought together the State Department for Water and Sanitation, Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company (NCWSC), and AWWDA officials to deliberate on matters relating to bulk water infrastructure development and service delivery.

The engagement provided an opportunity for the Committee to receive updates on African Development Bank (AfDB) & AFD -funded water infrastructure projects, the implementation framework guiding the projects, and the Agency's role in the development and management of bulk water infrastructure.

The discussions also covered the methodology for determining bulk water tariffs supplied to Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company, project implementation progress, and collaboration between national and county institutions.

AWWDA reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, accountability and collaboration with all stakeholders in the delivery of strategic water infrastructure. The Agency reiterated that continuous engagement with oversight institutions and sector partners is essential in advancing sustainable bulk water investments that strengthen water security and improve access to safe and reliable water services.

The engagement reflects AWWDA's continued commitment good governance, intergovernmental collaboration and the development of resilient, future-ready water infrastructure that supports the growing water needs of Nairobi and the surrounding region.

Joseph Kamau, today, chaired a crucial stakeholder engagement meeting with the leadership and committee members of the Muthaiga North residents association regarding the upcoming construction of the Gigiri-Karura project. The session was attended by key community representatives, including the Chairperson and Secretary of Muthaiga North.

During the engagement, the CEO and the technical team detailed the comprehensive scope of works and the specific project methodologies designed to ensure efficient ex*****on. The presentation provided complete transparency regarding the project's timeline and day-to-day operations to ensure alignment with the host community.

To safeguard the neighborhood's quality of life, the management outlined critical environmental and social mitigation measures. These include a robust traffic management plan to handle vehicular flow and minimize local congestion, along with strict spoil management protocols to effectively handle excavated earth and site waste. AWWDA further committed to finalizing any outstanding general site issues with the community within a week's time.
