During the we joined the world in the global call to create a period friendly world. We held an event at Rota Comprehensive school in Kisumu West where we reaffirmed that menstrual health is a matter of human rights, dignity and equality.

We were joined by Freshlife Kisumu, KUAP and the County Government of Kisumu. The day featured interactive sessions with both girls and boys on navigating menstrual hygiene practices. Emphasis was placed on the importance of upholding period dignity and breaking the silence around menstruation to help create a period-friendly space for the girls.

In this era of information overload among young learners, we took time to educate and sensitize the pupils on s*x education. The County Public Health Officer Dr. Ongwara informed the learners about the triple threats within our communities that continue to affect many young people, leading to school dropouts due to uncontrolled s*xual engagements.

The event culminated with donations of sanitary essentials, soap, and refreshments. The noble act of providing these essentials brought smiles, confidence, and reassurance to many of the learners.

Through such collaborations, KIWASCO continues to demonstrate that access to WASH services goes hand in hand with empowering communities on health education, dignity, and care for the next generation.

Today marked a significant moment for the residents of Bandani as KIWASCO joined the County Government of Kisumu, Shack Dwellers International (SDI), and other partners in commissioning the completed water project in the area.

Funded by UK Aid through the International Development Climate Resilience (IDCR) Programme, the project seeks to pilot locally appropriate and climate-resilient solutions within vulnerable informal urban settlements.

The event, which was presided over by the CECM for Water, Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change, Ms. Judith, aims to enhance access to safe and clean water right at residents’ doorsteps through affordable last-mile connections. The 1.7-kilometre water network extension is expected to serve 50 households in Bandani.

During his address, Eng. Oria called on the community to help safeguard the infrastructure by reporting vandalism and any illegal activities. He noted that this would help the company in managing Non-Revenue Water incidents while ensuring residents continue to enjoy an uninterrupted flow of water.

Other partners involved in the project include Muungano wa Wanavijiji and the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine.

KIWASCO is one of the few utilities implementing the City-Wide Inclusive Sanitation (CWIS) Plan; a transformative roadmap to achieving equitable, safe, and sustainable sanitation for all by 2050.

This week, we are honored to host a delegation of over 24 officials from Somalia’s Ministries of Water & Health, alongside municipal representatives, for an exclusive CWIS tool kit training.

They are joining us for a 5-day, peer-to-peer exchange visit to learn from our institutional experience in utility-led urban water and sanitation service delivery in Kisumu City.

Key areas of focus include regulatory model, pro-poor service delivery, tariff structures, and the formalization of manual pit emptiers within the faecal sludge management chain.

For practical learning, the delegation will be visiting the Nyalenda Oxidation Ponds and other specialized faecal sludge management facilities to see sustainable urban sanitation practices in action.

We value the partnership and wish the team well as we work together toward a shared future of inclusive sanitation and sustainable water security. Welcome to Kisumu!
