Growing cucumbers in a greenhouse? Don't let the vine bend over the trellising wire.

Cucumber vines grow long, and once they cross the trellising wire, they need to be brought back down carefully.

As our Agronomist explains, during winter crop management, the supporting wires are brought closer together, and the vine is guided from the inside towards the outside.

The important step? Apply a clip at the trellising point.

The clip supports the vine and helps prevent it from bending directly over the wire, which can affect its future growth.

Winter cucumber farming isn't just about growing the crop. It's about managing water, leaves and harvest timing correctly.

In North India, the main cucumber season is March–April. Under protected cultivation, farmers can grow cucumbers from October to March, but winter conditions call for careful crop management.

Water management: Avoid excessive watering. Provide water when the plant requires it.

Vegetation management: Too many leaves increase evaporation, and during cold nights, moisture can condense on the leaves and cause disease.

In North India, winter brings reduced sunlight and cold westerly winds, making greenhouse climate management especially important.

Our AgriFirst agronomy team explains how to use rolling side curtains and sliding shade nets to manage greenhouse conditions.

Keep the curtain lowered on the side facing the westerly wind to reduce weather shock to the plants and help maintain humidity inside. When ventilation is necessary, raise the curtains for an hour or two, but keep them lowered most of the time during winter.

The right clip placement makes plant support easier.

Trellising is an important part of supporting plants as they grow upwards in a greenhouse or polyhouse.

Our AgriFirst agronomy team demonstrates how to apply tomato clips correctly:

• Use around 3–4 clips per plant.
• Place each clip just below a node for easier locking.
• As the plant grows upwards, the lower clips may no longer be needed.

Correct clip placement helps provide support and makes plant training easier.
