Curtains are often the showpiece of a room, but they have the propensity for getting really bogged down with dust and dirt. Often we don’t pay enough attention to curtains and drapes when we’re cleaning. Little critters such as dust mites like to hide in drapes and curtains.
If you do happen to shake them out or vacuum them one day, you may find yourself in a cloud of dust, dirt, and if you have pets, pet dander. At this point, you have a few options: take them down and wash them (or have a carpet and upholstery company come in to do the job); have them dry cleaned; or, if they’re in really rough shape, replace them. Before they get to the point of being unsalvageable, there are some things you can do to keep your beautiful window coverings in tip-top shape.
What You Can Do
Dust Them Regularly
When you’re dusting or vacuuming your curtains, start at the top and work down. Make sure to do the hems and all the folds where dust settles. Vacuum or dust before wiping them with a damp cloth or sponge. And make sure to dust or vacuum both sides. Dust and dirt don’t have a preference.
Steam Clean
Carpet and upholstery cleaning companies may offer steam cleaning for curtains. If you do it yourself, follow the directions on the curtains and the steam cleaner. Close the windows prior to beginning, and wait awhile before you dust or clean your house afterwards.
Washing
If your curtains are made of washable material, the easiest way of cleaning them is by putting them in the washing machine. Use the delicate cycle and wash in cold water. You should use a detergent made for delicate fabrics. To dry them, you can put them in the dryer on low for about 15 minutes, or hang them right out of the washer. And remember, if your curtains’ label says “dry clean only,” listen to that advice, or you could be shopping for new window treatments.
