Autorickshaws in Bangalore to get GPS makeover

Bangalore may soon have a new avatar.

Even as BBMP has come up with a proposal to install GPS systems in 20,000 auto-rickshaws in the city as a means to improve commuter services, including security, transport department officials have been training auto-rickshaw drivers on using GPS systems that include an emergency button connected to a police helpline and a bill generation system apart from route maps.
The BBMP announced it would be providing Rs 6,000 to 20,000 auto rickshaws to upgrade to the GPS mode.
“Such GPS-monitor devices will enable passengers to see driver and vehicle details, speed, and will provide a real time route map on a point-to-point basis. The passengers can also avail printed invoices,” Commissioner for Transport and Road Safety K Amarnarayan said.
The GPS panel also comes with a panic button that passengers can trigger during emergency or if the driver is going off-course. The device will instantly send signals to a receiver that will be connected to law enforcement agencies who could immediately send help to the spot.
Autorickshaw unions meanwhile are demanding that all 1.20 lakh rickshaws in the city be provided GPS systems by the government.

India-bound Terra R6 electric autorickshaw unveiled

Rickshaws are arguably one of the most popular means of transport in India, but they are extremely noisy, pollute the environment and the fares are always on the rise owing to higher running costs. Terra, the Japanese company which unveiled three motorcycles at the expo earlier this year, plans to change that with its new electric three wheeler offering , the R6. The company says that it will launch the vehicle in 2015 in the Indian market.

Toru Tokushige, CEO and founder, Terra Motors said, “There is huge three wheeler market in Asia, for example in India. So we’ll release the R6 with a strong durability and safety.”

Measuring 2,950mm x 1,090mm x 1,800mm, the R6 can carry a total of seven occupants (six passengers and the driver) and can attain a maximum speed of 30kmph. The company claims a seven hour time for the battery to charge completely. An 80 per cent quick charge is said to take 2-3 hours. The company says that the R6 can pull tight 3.2 metre radius turn with a motorcycle-like handlebar.
Let’s talk about the benefits then – electric vehicles are super silent, don’t emit fumes or smoke, usually leave no by products and have low running/maintenance costs. Terra says that with an average run of 100km per day, yearly savings can amount to a substantial Rs 82,429 which would otherwise be spent on conventional fuel.

Electric vehicles are still new in India and the price-point would play a major factor in the adaptability of this rickshaw. Ideologies and mindsets can be massively swayed by pricing the product competitively. Electric vehicles have failed to make a dent on the market thanks to expensive batteries that are usually imported, the heavy taxes that are imposed and the lack of subsidies from the government adding to the vehicles being pricier. A classic example will be the very capable Mahindra Reva e2o. All said, this electric three wheeler looks very promising with the company targeting sales of around 10,000 units a year. The success however would be based on the pricing, which is yet to be revealed

Watch out for this auto if India wins WC

Thirty-year-old Chennai autorickshaw driver offers free rides for two days
How many die-hard cricket fans will be willing to sacrifice their income for a couple of days if India wins the World Cup?
Not many, but a 30-year-old autorickshaw driver in the city has announced he will do so — he has offered free rides for two days.
Meet ‘Speed’ Murugesh, the autorickshaw driver who operates from a stand on Greams Road. A huge poster, with pictures of Virat Kohli and M.S. Dhoni, announcing the offer is stuck on his vehicle. It also carries his mobile phone number (9551535383) for passengers to contact in case the team emerges victorious.
“I have been crazy about cricket since my school days. In fact, I played for my school team and I now play tennis ball matches at the Gopalapuram ground,” says the tall and well-built youngster.
On an average, he earns around Rs. 1,000 every day. “I save around Rs. 700, after all other expenses. So, if India wins, I will be foregoing nearly Rs. 1,500 as I have announced free rides for two days in my auto, from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., to any destination in the city,” he says.
“In 2011 too, I offered free rides in my rented vehicle. The Tamil Nadu Cricket Association gifted me Rs. 1 lakh after learning about my gift to society. With the money, I purchased a new autorickshaw,” says Murugesh, who earned the prefix ‘Speed’ to his name for his athletic skills.

She Autos an instant hit in town

Five pink autorickshaws ply on Pathanamthitta roads

Pathanamthitta is becoming a model in gender support, with the Pathanamthitta municipality pioneering She Auto service in the town limits.

Taking a queue from the Shetaxi scheme of the Social Welfare Department, the civic body here has introduced the State’s maiden She Auto scheme a month ago. Painted in pink, the She Autos are fast getting popular in the town, says A. Sureshkumar, municipal chairman, who is the brain behind the women empowerment programme.

The municipality has sanctioned 12 She Autos and the first allotment of five autorikshaws hit the road a month ago. The other seven beneficiaries are undergoing driving classes and vehicles will be allotted to them as soon as they qualify the driving test, says the civic body chief.

The municipality has provided subsidy to the tune of Rs.60,000 each to the beneficiaries belonging to Scheduled Castes sections and Rs.40,000 to those in the general category. The civic body has also arranged vehicle loan to all the 12 beneficiaries through UCO Bank.

“A majority of our customers are women and we earn a profit of Rs.650 to Rs.750 a day,” say Sindhu, Lonamma and Sathi Muraleedharan, She Auto drivers. Suchitra and Rajalakshmi are the other two She Auto drivers in the town.

However, the autorickshaw drivers at the autorickshaw stand near the private bus stand are up in arms against allotting a separate stand for She Autos in front of the private bus stand. District Collector S. Harikishore has intervened in the issue and an amicable settlement is expected soon, says Mr. Sureshkumar.

India’s first woman auto-rickshaw driver

Shila Dawre made it to Limca Book of World Records for being the first Indian woman auto-rickshaw driver.

Women need to break barriers to make place in male-centric fields, says India’s first woman auto-rickshaw driver
Dawre narrates how she got associated with the Auto-rickshaw Union and got recognised in the Limca Book of World Records also as the first woman auto-rickshaw driver in the country.
It was in the 1980’s when 18-year-old Shila Dawre, first decided on doing something that her peers would not dream of—driving. Not many women were encouraged to take up a male-dominated profession then, but Dawre was adamant that she would do something out-of-the box. So in 1988, she left her home in Parbhani district and came to Pune to become India’s first woman auto-rickshaw driver.
