Car Audio Tuning Basics : Are you listening to noise \ Distortion?
=====================================================
YES!!!!
Most of the people just use OEM headunit (as it is), some change the speakers, some add a subwoofer, some add an amp. In any case, people crank the volume and ends up in listening to distortion or noise harmonics than music.
1st Reason : OEM headunit
Based on once of the recent audio installation in a new gen Duster, its interesting to see that the o/p starts distorting even at around 50% of the volume without any load. Started to see the distortion and clipping in an oscilloscope @ 1000Hz test tone at ~60% and for 60Hz by around 50%.
This is the main reason that people say OEM headunits are supposed to be used with the OEM speakers and those will be a full range speakers with high sensitivity. Its not recommended to just change the speakers (yes, you will hear a better sound than oem) but on cranking the volume the amp will clip and tweeters can be damaged due to the clipping dc current. You should use atleast an amplifier to drive the speakers. However the bottleneck is that as I had mentioned above the distorted signal will be amplified else keep the volume low.
Crap In >> Crap out, simple as that. Hence a good quality headunit shows a big difference in sound quality.
Note : There are other methods to find the distortion checking, will be covered in an upcoming video
