President John Dramani Mahama has directed Zoomlion to immediately operationalise all waste transfer stations in the Greater Accra Region to accelerate the evacuation of waste generated by the recent floods.

The waste transfer stations located at Achimota, Teshie, Ashaiman, Pantang, ACARP, Accra IRECOP, Kpone and Adipa will serve as temporary collection points, enabling waste collectors to offload refuse closer to affected communities instead of travelling long distances to final disposal sites. Zoomlion will subsequently deploy heavy-duty haulage trucks to transport the compacted waste to ACARP and Accra IRECOP for processing and treatment.

Speaking during the National General Clean-Up Exercise at Alajo on July 11, Executive Chairman of the Jospong Group of Companies Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong confirmed that the transfer stations have been activated and are currently receiving waste.

To support the emergency clean-up operation, Zoomlion has deployed more than 150 trucks, 30 waste compactors, 2,000 tricycle operators, and over 1,000 personnel across all 29 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the Greater Accra Region.

The government says the intervention is expected to enhance the efficiency of post-flood waste evacuation while strengthening a more sustainable and integrated waste management system for the capital.
