Rats can squeeze through surprisingly small gaps — around 15–20mm. A simple way to check potential entry points around your property is to use a £1 coin as a rough gauge.

Check around: 🔎 Doors and thresholds
🔎 Pipework and service entries
🔎 Air bricks and vents
🔎 Gaps around walls and outbuildings
🔎 Drains and other possible access points

If a gap is roughly the size of a £1 coin or larger, it could potentially be big enough for a rat to exploit.

🐀 RAT INFESTATION – HOW THEY GAIN ACCESS TO YOUR PROPERTY! 🐀

Another example of how rats can find their way into a property through structural defects and small access points.

On this job, we identified a broken air vent and a hole alongside a clay gutter, providing access for rats to get underneath the foundations and into the property.

Once inside, rats will often use wall cavities, following pipework and electrical cables as they search for food, water and suitable harbourage. Unfortunately, these rats managed to make their way into the kitchen, where evidence of their activity was found, including chewed food packaging.

🔎 What to look out for:

Broken or damaged air vents.

Holes and gaps around drainage and guttering.

Openings around pipes and cables.

Droppings and signs of gnawing.

Chewed food packaging and contamination.

⚠️ Prevention is key! Rats can exploit surprisingly small gaps to gain access. Identifying and sealing entry points, alongside appropriate pest control measures, is essential to help prevent further activity.
