Bentham Geoconsulting Ltd - Geophysical Surveys Bentham Geoconsulting Ltd. Environmental & Engineering Geophysical Consultancy & Survey Services Mapping and location of abandoned and illegal landfill cells.

We provide geophysical consultancy and contracting surveys services to assist our clients in locating sub-surface targets, to map geology or to make non destructive structural assessments. Projects range from large brown and greenfield surveys to locate in-situ foundations, voids or geological changes, right down to surveys of concrete slabs to map reinforcement and surveys of gardens to help pinp

oint the position of mine shafts. Applications include:-
Geological, Geotechnical and Environmental geophysics surveys
Agricultural & Precision Farming - soil conductivity measurements. Landfill formation level surveys for CQA. Concrete thickness, internal or sub-slab void location. Steel reinforcement and tendon mapping. Mapping of abandoned mine workings
Geological profiling - faults, fissures, infilled valleys, solution (karst) voids and caves
Quarrying - infilled quarry boundaries and headwall profiling
Slope stability data
Location of underground petroleum tanks and interceptors. Small scale services surveys - electronic trail holes. Chimney flue location
DSEAR Soil Electrical Resistivity measurements for new petrol stations and other explosive atmospheres
Soil Thermal Resistivity/Conductivity

We have been busy with lots of interesting surveys. Reinforcement mapping and cover surveys, Post tension inspections, locating lost landfill, mapping rising mains, soil electrical resistivity, locating bell pits with magnetometry and conductivity. All in a days work.

A collapse within a supermarket car park caused some concern as historic records and service mapping didn't show any likely cause. A GPR survey of the area showed that the likely cause was an unrecorded pipe which had been truncated and was causing washout. A rapid site attendance, during an early evening, provided direct answers for the client without the disruption of intrusive investigations.

Post Tensioned Special Inspections. This involves GPR scans to locate the tendons, followed by exposing the tendon sheath via coring. A delicate chisel then breaks the sheath open to inspect the tendon and to confirm its X, Y and Z coordinates within the structure. This work always involves lots of bouncing around in MEWP.

Is there a concern for the presence of voids under your site? Microgravity surveying in difficult woodland terrain. Needs a windless day to prevent ground movement with each survey station being prepared, levelled and then measured over a longer time period for averaging.

Today we are undertaking a GPR survey, part of an extensive PTSI survey within a box section bridge. Our job is to map tendons and Macalloy bars. I have to say that it's a little creepy in here!

We have located a buried WW2 Buffalo LVT! After the 1947 floods in Crowland, Lincolnshire, WW2 Buffalo LVT's were used to plug the d**e breach. Some were left buried on site.

A local group was determined to extract one before the 75th anniversary of the event but had no idea where to start to dig. Their plan was to have one mounted in the village as a memorial. Not only would this celebrate the efforts in containing the 1947 floods but would also be one of the few surviving LVTs used by British Forces during the Rhine Crossings

We undertook an survey in 2020 to try to indicate likely targets. The Buffalo LVT was an armoured steel vehicle and was likely to produce an excellent geophysical contrast. We covered the full field area within a day. The results indicated several possible targets, two of them having sufficient amplitude to be considered for excavation.

And in the last week the local group has been in action over one of the anomalies. Due to their determination they managed to get together all the equipment for an impressive excavation and extraction. The photographs speak a thousand words.
