Why not include your chimney as part of your spring clean? It will leave your chimney ready for the next cold snap we have become accustomed to and winter ready! Your sweep will be able to alert you to any bird activity and act now – next month it will be too late as it’s against the law to remove a nest in May or June since there may be young in the nest.

Now spring is upon us those little jackdaws are eying up a place to build their nests, they love a dark enclosed space, and your chimney could be perfect! They will be starting to nest march/April, but this is dependent on the weather. They are of nothing, persistent and resourceful and will find any weakness in your chimney to being setting up their cosy home ready to lay their eggs. By May the chicks will be hatching and for the next couple of months its illegal to remove a live nest.

Keep your eyes peeled for signs of a nest, twigs in the grate are a clue!
The problem will be obvious when you choose to light a fire as smoke will enter the room. Worse still if you have a gas fire as carbon monoxide is colourless and odourless. It can enter the room undetected unless you have taken appropriate action.
Top tips:
- Check your chimney stack for bird activity
- Make sure you have cowls/bird guard fitted to stop them entering your chimney
- Make sure you have a working Carbon monoxide detector fitted
- Make sure you get your chimney swept every 12 months

A fire service has warned residents to get their chimneys swept after a recent spate of blazes.

This is a great month to consider ordering your logs and seasoning them yourself (dry storage). We have been very surprised at the number of times people believe they are using seasoned wood, only to discover (using our moisture meters) that the wood is really damp! It should only contain 15-20% moisture – it burns more efficiently and makes your log purchase more economical.
