Running out of time to do the annual cut back of pampas grasses. Remove dead leaves, and manage its size. Cutting it back keeps it healthy, encourage new growth and prevents the center from rotting!

We look after the grounds for a apartment block, this small slip of garden wasnt ever utilised. So we cleared, leveled, added w**d membrane and plum coloured slate giving a clean smart and usable base. Basic but done the job!

Cottage gardens don’t rely on strict spacing or perfect symmetry. ❤️
They work because plants are layered, allowed to mingle, and chosen to support one another as they mature. Over time, the border fills in naturally, softening edges and reducing maintenance.

These plants are classic choices for U.S. cottage-style borders that age gracefully.

• Climbing Roses — Zones 4–9
Vertical interest that softens walls and fences.

• Hollyhock — Zones 3–9
Tall spires that anchor the back layer.

• Delphinium — Zones 3–7
Upright blooms that add structure and height.

• Peony — Zones 3–8
Full, long-lived plants that dominate the mid-layer.

• Hydrangea — Zones 4–9
Large blooms that fill space and add mass.

• Lavender — Zones 5–9
Fragrant foliage that edges paths and borders.

• Salvia — Zones 5–10
Reliable spikes that weave through other plants.

• Coral Bells (Heuchera) — Zones 4–9
Low mounds of foliage that soften edges.

• Creeping Thyme — Zones 4–9
Groundcover that fills gaps and spills gently.

Cottage borders improve when plants are allowed to grow into each other instead of being held apart.

Late winter is the best time to renovate an overgrown hedge.
Some hedging plants can take a hard cut and still regrow thick and full.

• Yew — one of the few conifers that resprouts from old wood
• Privet — cut back to 12 inches and it rebounds fast
• Beech — can be reduced heavily and still refills from old branches
• Hornbeam — reliable regrowth after hard late-winter pruning
• Hawthorn — tough hedge that regenerates dense and thorny in 1–2 seasons
• Holly — handles severe cuts better than most evergreens
• Pyracantha — hard cut triggers vigorous new flowering and fruiting growth
• Box honeysuckle — cut to 6 inches to rebuild a fuller hedge
• Barberry — tolerates hard renovation and returns with fresh color

Hard renovation looks drastic at first.
By spring, the hedge starts rebuilding stronger than before.

Plants you need to prune this month, before the summer season comes to an end. Pruning is important as it will encourage more growth, maintain shape and remove any diseased or damaged parts.
1. Lavender
2. Climbing Hydrangea
3. Wisteria
4. Rambling Roses

The key with Lavender is to aim to keep the plant compact. Prune faded flower stalks and roughly an inch of leaf growth. You should not cut back into the woody part of the plant, unless you want to remove damaged stems. If you do cut back into any woody areas, this can affect how the plant regrows.

Climbing Hydrangea should be pruned after it has finished flowering, as this will ensure that the plant has enough time to develop flowering wood for the following year. Prune back any flowered shoots, and shorten any new growth that looks to be overly long.

After wisteria has flowered, cut back any whispy green shoots that are part of this year's growth to a few leaves. This will control the size of the plant, and encourage it to produce flower buds instead of foliage next year. Do not prune back too much because the plant will lose valuable foliage it needs to produce food and recover from flowering.

With Rambling Roses remove dead, damaged or twiggy growth on younger plants. When pruning older plants, thin and shorten excessive growth and prune out stems that have flowered if space is restricted. You should avoid pruning roses when it is due to rain, as fungal spores may splash onto the surface of fresh pruning cuts and infect them.

Is surprising what you can achieve with hard work, a bit of imagination and stuff you already have in the garden. A simple and cost effective way to make nothing, into something 🌞
