Why Do We Turn the Clocks Back Today?

Today marks the end of British Summer Time as the UK turns the clocks back by one hour. But why do we do this?

The idea dates back to 1907, when William Willett (a builder and keen horse rider) campaigned for more daylight in the mornings during the darker months to help people make better use of natural light and save energy. The change was officially introduced during World War One to conserve coal and boost productivity.

So today, we gain an extra hour in bed as we return to Greenwich Mean Time, a tradition over 100 years old, designed to make the most of daylight during autumn and winter!
