In 1696, England taxed homes in Wi******er by the number of windows they had. More windows, more tax, so people bricked theirs up rather than pay. Whole rooms were plunged into darkness and you can still spot the blocked-up openings on old buildings today.

We think that’s a bit sad. Windows are one of the best things about a home - light, warmth, a view of the garden as long as they’re clean.

Good news: nobody’s taxing your windows anymore. The only thing dimming the light now is a bit of dirt on the glass. And that part we can help with - cleaning the insides of your windows is one of the services we offer. www.hausmaids.co.uk

England play Argentina on Wednesday night. So, naturally, we started wondering how the Argentinians talk about their homes and found something rather nice.

The main language there is Spanish, and it turns out they do exactly what we do: they have one word for the building, and a different one for the home. Casa and hogar - just like our house and home.
What's lovely is where each language got that second word from.

Ours, “home”, comes from the Old English hām - meaning a settlement, a homestead. The place you’re from. The place you belong.

Theirs, hogar, comes from the Latin for hearth. The fireplace. So in Spanish, a home isn’t the place you belong - it’s the fire that everyone gathers round. (It’s where we get “focus” from, funnily enough. The fireplace was the thing the whole house was pointed at.)

On Wednesday evening, the focal point of the home won’t be the fireplace. It’ll be the telly - and for two hours, every room in the country will be pointed the same way.

Which makes both languages right at once. The place you belong, and the fire you all gather round.

We’ll look after the house. The home is your bit.

Come on England.

If Haus Maids were a Norwegian company, we’d have a slightly different name over the door: Hus Maids.

In Norway, a house is a hus and that’s no coincidence. English house, German Haus and Norwegian hus are all the same word, each inherited from a single ancient Germanic ancestor.

Over the centuries, English and German both did the same thing to it, stretching that old vowel into the “ow” sound you hear in house and Haus, which is why those two are near-identical. Norwegian took the quieter route and kept it as one clean vowel: hus.

The Vikings even built new words from it and handed them to English. Husband started life as húsbóndi - a “house-dweller.” Hustings, where politicians still stand at election time, comes from hústhing: a “house-assembly.”

Haus is, of course, the German spelling. But this Saturday, with England facing Norway? For one night only, we’re House Maids.

Come on England. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Grass court season has a certain elegance to it, a sense that summer has properly arrived. Whites pressed, lawns immaculate, and the best afternoons spent doing very little at all.

We think a home should feel the same way. Effortless, immaculate, and ready for the moment - without you having lifted a finger to make it so.

That’s the Haus Maids difference. You enjoy the summer. We’ll look after the rest.
