🚨 Not every rat problem starts on your own property…
Today I attended a customer’s home after they had seen rats in their garden.
After carrying out a thorough inspection, it quickly became apparent that the issue wasn’t being caused by anything the customer was doing. There were no bird feeders, no pet food left outside, no significant access issues and no waste attracting rodents.
Unfortunately, the neighbouring property was a very different story.
As you can see from the photographs, there is a substantial accumulation of domestic waste, overflowing bins and rubbish stored throughout the garden. This provides rats with exactly what they’re looking for:
🐀 A reliable food source
🐀 Shelter from predators and the weather
🐀 Ideal nesting and breeding conditions
Once rats establish themselves in an environment like this, they don’t stay behind one fence. They’ll travel between neighbouring gardens, sheds and properties looking for water, additional food and new harbourage.
How would we tackle a problem like this?
✔️ Carry out a survey to identify active rat runs, burrows and harbourage.
✔️ Implement a targeted treatment programme using secure bait stations and professional rodenticides where appropriate.
✔️ Continue regular inspections until all activity has ceased.
✔️ Advise on proofing measures to reduce access into surrounding properties.
✔️ Where necessary, recommend that the local authority’s Environmental Health team becomes involved, as excessive waste accumulation can become a public health concern affecting neighbouring residents.
It’s important to understand that treatment alone is rarely a permanent solution if the source of the infestation remains. Unless the rubbish is removed and waste is managed correctly, new rats are likely to continue moving into the area.
This is a good reminder that effective pest control is about much more than simply putting poison down—it’s about identifying and removing the reason the pests are there in the first place.
If you’ve started seeing rats in your garden, don’t assume you’ve done something wrong. Sometimes the source is beyond your boundary, but early intervention can stop a small problem becoming a major infestation.
