So I’m always being ask for recommendations on new vacuum cleaners, I get asked the question so often I thought I’d do a post, I think vacuum choice is about personal taste, so it’s hard to pick just one answer, so here are my thoughts
If your less mobile or older and have health issues you want something light and probably battery operated so there are a few choices, the main are Dyson or Shark with a few other less well known contenders, most are bagless cleaners and therefore will require constant filter cleaning, yes constant! At least monthly or you will find a major loss in suction and they both have more than one filter to clean.
Even if you do this monthly you will experience a gradual loss in suction as the battery becomes less effective, so be prepared to put up with that or buy a new battery every couple of years. If this option still appeals I would get a Shark over the new Dyson any day as they have a much superior level of suction.
There are other choices for battery vacuums now, some companies realising that people want bags, Numatic International being one, have released a battery vacuum with bags or pods as they call them, no filters to clean and the suction is top notch, but you have to buy the pods, one is said to last on average 1 month, but then your still going to be dealing with the old lithium battery issues, but in my opinion I’d rather just change a bag than constantly clean filters, so I’m loving the new Henry/ Hetty Quick 💯better
Mains operated vacuums
There are 2 types really, commercial vacuums for industry and mains operated domestic cleaners, again some of these can be unsuitable for people due to size and weight and also the suction can be really strong and older people struggle to push and pull them, again you have the issues with constant filter cleaning, so if you know your not going to bother then get one with bags.
So let’s start with commercial, I think good old Numatic international has so many options nowadays different sizes of Henry, commercial Numatic and a green coloured XL pet, they are relatively inexpensive compared to the battery vacuums and have one filter that you can buy and replace every couple of years when it gets dirty looking and not to mention the very long cable very practical. These can also make great household vacuums if you have storage and the fact that they are heavy isn’t an issue.
So my top domestic mains vacuum is another bagged vacuum, Miele complete, these vacuums have amazing suction, which you can reduce very easily, they are light, the filter only needs changing a couple of times a year depending on use, the downside is they are pricey to buy, but like Numatic they last for years and years and rarely go wrong and as they have been out for so long you can easily buy parts online.
So this is purely my opinion from 7 years of cleaning and yes I’ve pretty much used most vacuums out there, I hope this helps you all make a decision and happy vacuum shopping 😁
