We are pleased to provide an update on the second year of the maintenance program for both the West and North Lighthouses.
The North Lighthouse is looking significantly refreshed, as has applied a new coat of white KIEM paint to the main elevation. Additionally, the annual repair and repainting of the balcony structure are underway, along with all planned preventive maintenance (PPM) tasks. We anticipate having this lighthouse winterized by late October.
The West Lighthouse is currently experiencing significant dampness and ventilation issues. This has negatively impacted the external masonry paint, with patches of peeling evident in multiple areas. While some of this was expected, the added moisture has had a greater effect on the paint system. KIEM Mineral Paints recently conducted an on-site inspection, and we have collaboratively developed a detailed action plan to address these issues before the winter months. Consequently, we have decided to postpone any masonry painting on the West Lighthouse until next spring.
These two historic buildings endure considerable wear and tear daily due to their exposed location. It is remarkable that they are still standing after 180+ years, a true testament to those who built and have maintained them.
We are proud to be doing this work on behalf of Whitehaven Harbour Commissioners as part of their Whitehaven Lighthouses Maintenance Programme, which is made possible with funding from the Sellafield Ltd SiX – Social Impact, Multiplied programme.
