Heat lowers the viscosity of dried sugars and proteins. This makes them soluble again rather than bonded to fibres. Cleaning solution is injected under controlled pressure, penetrating deep into the carpet pile and backing. The surfactants surround the organic residues, breaking surface tension and detaching them from fibres. Immediate high-powered vacuum extraction then removes the dissolved contaminants before they can resettle. Odour-causing bacteria are physically removed, not hidden. That is neutralisation by removal, not fragrance.

Because moisture is extracted in the same pass, carpets dry quickly with normal central heating, reducing microbial regrowth. That is why smells do not return.

We remember 17 years ago today: The Grade II‑listed Grand Pier in Somerset suffered a devastating blaze in the early hours of 28 July 2008 due to an early alarm failure.

Whilst a fire alarm triggered at 01:35 BST, the alarm firm failed to contact the key-holders. Firefighters were not alerted until 06:46 BST, by which time the fire had escalated significantly.

The pavilion was destroyed in under two hours. The wooden superstructure was gutted; the iron supports and deck remained intact

Firefighting and emergency response from Avon Fire & Rescue Service was praised, they deployed around 80 firefighters, supported by 11 fire engines and specialist vehicles including an aerial ladder platform and a hazardous materials unit.

Following the destruction of the Grand Pier in 2008, the town rallied not only to rebuild the iconic structure but to reimagine the wider seafront as a resilient, attractive and multi-purpose public space, initiating a long-term vision that would blend heritage with contemporary infrastructure. The new Grand Pier, reopened in 2010, became a symbol of renewal, prompting wider investment into the Marine Lake, public art installations, and improvements across the promenade.

A key milestone in the town’s regeneration was the extensive refurbishment and expansion of the sea wall and promenade area, designed to both defend against the growing threat of tidal surges and deliver a vibrant civic environment for walking, cycling, and leisure. These civil works introduced high-quality paving, integrated lighting, and improved drainage, while retaining key Victorian architectural features and protecting marine biodiversity along the estuary.

The rebuilt promenade now stretches further along the coastline, linking anchor attractions and allowing for expanded use of space during public festivals, pop-up events, food festivals, and seasonal local markets.

In tandem with the coastal improvements, investment was also channelled into the town centre, improving transport links, reactivating historic buildings, and enhancing accessibility between the railway station, High Street, and seafront.
