Calling All Solid Fuel Users in Wakefield: When Did You Last Have Your Chimney Swept?

Summer might not be when you’re thinking about your fire, but it is one of the best times to get your chimney swept.

Booking during the warmer months means your chimney is clean, safe and ready to use when colder weather arrives, while helping you avoid the autumn and winter rush.

If you use a wood burner, open fire, multi fuel stove or other solid fuel appliance, regular sweeping helps keep your home safe, warm and efficient.

Why does it matter?

It helps reduce the risk of chimney fires by removing soot, tar and creosote build up.
It can help your appliance burn more efficiently, giving better heat output and less wasted fuel.
It can help identify blockages, nesting material, damage or poor ventilation.
It gives peace of mind before the colder months arrive.

How often your chimney or flue should be swept depends on your fuel, appliance, usage and flue design.

As a general guide:

• Smokeless fuel: at least once a year
• Wood: at least twice a year, or more often where used regularly
• NACS guidance also recommends quarterly sweeping when burning wood during periods of use

If you are not sure whether your chimney is due a sweep, it is always better to check early and be winter ready.

Cosysweep covers all Wakefield postcodes, Barnsley, South Leeds, HD8 and HD5.

Here are 2 stoves that have been burning Wood. One Dry Wood (less that 20% moisture content) one not. Can you tell which one is which?

The one on the left is from wet wood and has big lumps of creosote which were blocking the chimney flue before a Sweep and Service.

Creosote is made when you burn wet wood which causes incomplete combustion because the wood is not burning hot enough. This creosote builds up in the chimney Flue and can cause Carbon monoxide release (a deadly gas) or a chimney fire.

Please burn Nice dry wood less that 20% moisture content. If not sure buy kiln dried or buy a moisture meter to check.

It is also important to Sweep and service your stove. Quick rule if it has not been done for a year it needs doing.

The official recommendation from NACS and HETAS is:

Wood: Sweep every 3 Months when in use
Smokeless Coal: Once a year

Remember – Any problems with the chimney and it has not been swept to the correct time frame your insurance will in all probability not pay out as it will be classed as a failure to maintain!!

Is your fire Winter ready?
Why should you have your chimney swept?

1. Sweeping your chimney and servicing your stove help prevent chimney fires and ensure your heating system operates safely and efficiently.
2. Regular maintenance removes harmful build up like creosote and checks for wear or damage that could lead to dangerous carbon monoxide leaks.
3. Keeping both your chimney and stove in good condition extends their lifespan, saves money on repairs, and gives you peace of mind during colder months.

Official guidance on how often you must sweep a flue depends on the type of fuel you burn and the appliance you use. In the UK, the National Association of Chimney Sweeps (NACS) and HETAS (the official body for solid fuel heating installation) recommend the following:
• Smokeless fuel: At least once a year
• Wood: Quarterly Every 3 months when in use

These are general guidelines. More frequent sweeping may be required depending on usage, appliance type, flue design, and fuel quality. Always consult your stove or boiler manufacturer’s instructions and a registered chimney sweep for specific advice.

Here is a photo of a stove where dry wood was used and another where wet wood was used. It is really important to burn dry wood.
If you don’t burn dry wood the fire can burn with incomplete combustion making creosote. Creosote can stick to the inside of your flue. This is bad news as the creosote can ignite in the flue causing a chimney fire or choke the fire producing Carbon monoxide, a deadly gas.
Dry Wood:
• Burns cleaner with less smoke.
• Reduces creosote build up (lower chimney fire risk).
• Protects your stove and chimney.
• Improves air quality.
Wood should be under 20% moisture for best results. Use wood dried for at least 12 months and tested for moisture content or buy kiln dried wood.
Remember it’s not just all about the fuel, chimneys need regular sweeping too.
The official recommendation from NACS and HETAS is:

Wood: Sweep every 3 Months when in use

Smokeless Coal: Once a year.

Is your Fire Winter Ready??
Has it been Swept and Serviced?
Look what came out of a stove after its annual sweep. And a lovely clean open fire flue!!
Chimneys that have not been swept can cause Chimney fires and/or Carbon monoxide poisoning as the flues can become blocked and air is restricted.
The official recommendation from NACS and HETAS is:
Wood: Sweep every 3 Months when in use
Smokeless Coal: Once a year.

People often ask me what should my Stove look like after a sweep?

Well assuming it has a stainless steel flue liner ( most have ) like this. The soot should be a black or brown very fine powder, almost like talcum or flour.

This means your fuel is dry and you are getting complete combustion which means your stove is running efficiently. The soot should not have have any lumps or bumps or creosote in it.

Remember Solid Fuel Stoves must be swept regularly The official recommendation from NACS and HETAS is:

Wood: Sweep every 3 Months when in use

Smokeless Coal: Once a year.
