Elements of Bad Strategy
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When you undertake any real strategy work, and before you call it complete, consideration should be given to make sure you have addressed the 3 core elements of:
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- diagnosis
- guiding policy
- coherent action
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In carrying out the diagnosis really take the time to understand what is causing the problem you are trying to solve. Poor sales is not a problem in of itself but more likely a result of contributing factors at play further upstream from the point of sale.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Is the product right? Does it solve the customers pain point as promised? Is someone else doing it better? Are you fully using any competitive advantage you already own before attempting to create a new source of strength?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
While it is tempting to jump into the next Facebook campaign or commission a new website, in these slides we look at a few points that might indicate that more work might be needed on the strategy itself before beginning the ex*****on of tactics.

This saves wasted time and effort in the long run and increases the chances of a positive ROI on any actions carried out.

Elements of Good Strategy

While good strategy doesn’t follow the traditional fill in the blanks process of some normal business development tools, it does have certain elements that can be found in all good strategy work.

In this post we look at some of the key attributes you should look out for in your strategy and perhaps more importantly identify and address any that are missing or that can be clarified further before beginning the ex*****on phase of your strategy.

Here are some points of consideration you should ask yourself when reviewing your strategy.

* Is it coherent
* Is it informed by multiple viewpoints
* Does it apply owned strength
* Is it selective
* Is it clear
* Does it provide a competitive punch
* Is it applied to the big problem
* Are the actions realistic

What Strategy is Not

Strategy is NOT the normal day to day operational plans, processes, actions and tactics of an organisation with the word strategy appended to any one of its elements.

By really understanding the true composition of good strategy we stand a greater chance of our strategy having a successful outcome.

Having multiple “strategies” for everything from branding strategy to business strategy to social media strategy, causes confusion and misrepresents what strategy really is.

Why is this a big deal? For a start by identifying strategy in this way puts equal weighting across multiple efforts in an organisation. Everyone believes they are “doing strategy” and the focus that real strategy brings to the table is lost in a mountain of miscellaneous strategies for every pain point the company experiences.

Real strategy sits above the day to day operational processes and tactics of a company and seeks to address a key problem or problems that have a major impact on the overall success of an organisations efforts to reach its core objectives.

Also by clarifying our main strategy, the supporting efforts of branding, marketing and business planning etc become more aligned to the overall focused effort and become strategic in nature.

What is Strategy? Really?!!

At a time when it seems like we can add strategy to the end of any business action to create our latest strategy eg marketing strategy, IT strategy or customer retention strategy - in this series of posts I am going to try and help clarify what strategy really is. In this first post we will look at the structure of a strategy and define its core elements.

Over the next couple of days the series will explore more on what strategy is, what strategy is not and how you can effectively start using real strategy in your business, with hopefully a few helpful tips to get you started! :)
