It is with sad news that on the evening of the 14th of October, Oliver Madge passed away.
Those who knew Oli, knew that he was passionate about this industry, he had a vision and drive for professionalism which was years ahead of the curve.
He would also be the first person to tell me that a long and flowery obituary would be nonsense, and he would march on past it. He was strong willed; he had a plan and rarely let anything stand between he and it.
For those who didn’t know him, know this, although you may not have heard of Oli he almost certainly has effected your working life in some small way without your realising. From his work as a former CEO of the British Pest Control Association (BPCA), to his unwavering push to support training, education and the recognition of professional development, he has impacted this industry in ways that many of us never realised and that all of us should be grateful for. He was a champion and an advocate for pest control, appearing on TV and Radio or working with Governmental Departments and for sole traders alike, to every challenge he brought knowledge, support and purpose.
“I’ve known Oli for over 35 years as a friend. I saw him off at Heathrow to become a diving instructor on Australia’s Gold Coast for a couple of years. Upon his return, he worked for me briefly as a Private Investigator. Years later I had learned that he became a ‘name’ in the Pest Control industry. Having moved to France, he mentored me, to become the first British with a French qualification Pest Control. A great friend, a great trainer. Thanks Oli.” Robert Moon
“I took great confidence knowing Oly was always there for help and advice. He’s been a huge asset to our little industry and will be sorely missed. RIP Oly” Debbie Wilson FRSPH
Regardless of how you may have known him, too me Oli was more than a college or business partner, he was first and foremost a good friend. He was always there with a smile to talk shop or just chat, to put the world to rights or just to listen.
He will be missed… I will miss him.
