🐭🐜🐀 'PEST' OF THE WEEK 🐀🐜🐭

This week we are looking at the amazing bee! Though we would not consider them as pests, we get many phone calls about bees. We will do everything we can to help, except harm these buzzy little guys.

Bees are lovely creatures that do so much for our environment! Here are a few facts you may not have known:

⚫️ A bee is not just a bee, it could be a honeybee, bumble bee, or another species. In fact, there are 200 types of bees in the UK, including 25 different types of bumble bee.

⚫️ Have you ever seen a bumblebee crawling around the floor? It could be that it’s just having a rest, but if you think it is struggling there is something you can do to help: You can either gentle help the bee by placing them on a flower, or if there are no flowers around, you can mix 50% water and 50% white sugar and offer a one or two drops to the bee. This should give it the energy to fly to a safer location.

⚫️Bees like to have a good time and often relax with a good 'Waggle Dance'. Okay so it’s not actually a dance, but more of a way to communicate to other bees where the best source or pollination is.

⚫️Though we wish no harm to any queen bee, they do sometimes pass away before there time. If this happens the hive can create a new queen by choosing a larva and feeding it special food called royal jelly. This larva will grow and develop into a fertile queen bee.

So, there are just a handful of quick facts about our humble bees. Remember bees are generally harmless and will not harm you unless they feel provoked. With that being said they can cause a lot of harm if they swarm someone, though this does not happen often.

It is never okay to intentionally harm a bee or beehive, and if they are causing issues and absolutely have to be dealt with, they should always be moved responsibility by professionals to somewhere safe where they can thrive.

🐭🐜🐀 PEST OF THE WEEK 🐀🐜🐭

Stepping away from our fury little rodent friends, this week we will be looking at the not so cute wasp! These guys are certainly at the top of my list for least favourite insects, however contrary to popular belief wasps are not just the useless insect that flies around just stinging people.

Here are some quick-fire facts about wasps you may not have known:

⚫️ Though they may not mean too, wasps will help pollinate while on the hunt for nectar. It may not be as substantial as our friendly bee's but every little helps.

⚫️ Have you ever been stung by a wasp? Well, you can thank the ladies for that one! Female wasps carry the stinger whereas the males do not. I guess we know who wears the trousers in this relationship.

⚫️ Ever wondered where the wasps go during winter? They die. At least most of them do. The young queen wasps that are born will fly away to find a small hole to hibernate in to keep safe. Once spring rolls around they will venture out to make a new hive and the process repeats.

⚫️️ This queen is no slouch. Once she wakes up and finds a place for a home, she will start building a hive herself. made from wood and saliva, she will work away and eventually lay her eggs to create a colony.

As much as we dislike wasps, they are truly amazing creatures, with so much more to them then I have been able to list here. Maybe one day we can revisit the wasp for some more facts.

As usual, if you have an issue with wasps, feel free to get in contact with us. Just remember to stay away from those stingers.

Carried out another bedbug job this morning. Today was a follow-up visit and we had found a few still in the wooden slats of the beds.

Bedbugs can be difficult to deal with sometimes, but we are hopeful this particular issue will be easy to resolve.

If you need help with a bedbug situation, feel free to contact us.

🐭🐜🐀 PEST OF THE WEEK 🐀🐜🐭

Sticking with rodents these cute little guys often get forgotten about when thinking about pest control, however if you have them in your loft you will know about it. They can be extremely loud to the point where you will lose sleep, and if you are really unlucky, they can cause damage to your home.

Squirrels are a favourite for some, but here are some reasons they need to be controlled.

⚫️ If you are unlucky enough to have a squirrel enter your home, it is important to try get them out as fast as possible, otherwise they may tear insulation from electrical wires, tear up fibre glass insulation or even chew through the walls, just to name a few reasons.

⚫️It's not just in our homes, but squirrels also prey on our wild birds and go after their eggs. It has been reported that fledgling rates have been reduced by 15% due to grey squirrels!

⚫️For you garden enthusiasts, grey squirrels have also been known to wreak havoc on gardens and orchards, eating recently sewed seeds and causing a path of destruction while they are at it.

⚫️Although squirrels are primarily herbivores, in some situations where seeds and nuts are not available, they will eat insects, smaller rodents, birds’ eggs and nestlings.

Squirrels are fantastic creatures, but like most wild animals can cause a lot of damage both inside and outside our homes. Remember, if you have a squirrel in your loft, it will likely run away from you however, they can get much bigger than you think and will attack if they feel threatened.

If you have any squirrel issues, feel free to contact us for advice.
