“If we save the sea, we save the world”

From the icy seas of our poles to remote coral islands, David Attenborough has filmed in every ocean habitat on planet earth. Now, with long-term collaborator Colin Butfield, he shares the story of our last great wilderness - the one which shapes the land we live on, regulates our climate and creates the air we breathe.

“Ocean - Earth’s Last Wilderness” is a book almost a century in the making, but one that has never been more urgently needed.

“Is a River Alive?” by celebrated writer Robert Macfarlane is a brilliant, perspective-shifting new book which answers a resounding yes to the question of its title.

At its heart is a single, transformative idea: that rivers are not mere matter for human use, but living beings – who should be recognized as such in both imagination and law. Is a River Alive? takes the reader on an exhilarating exploration of the past, present and futures of this ancient, urgent concept.

💦 Water is our single most precious resource and these books confirm that we should do all we can to protect our oceans and rivers and the life they support.

These and many other books - new and second hand - can be found at the community shop at Strathpeffer’s old station.

Open today, Friday 29th May, and Saturday 30th May between 10.30am and 4.30pm.

📣 Book signing event!

🗓️ Next Saturday 23 May at Strathpeffer’s old Victorian station from 10am.

In conjunction with the Highland Museum of Childhood, we are delighted to welcome our distinguished guest author, Lin Treadgold.

Lin will be travelling all the way from Devon to launch her new novel, The Trail to Freedom. This World War II historical romance offers a truly original story.

Hailing from Yorkshire and following a fifteen-year period spent living in the Netherlands, Lin returned to the UK in 2015. After the passing of her father, Lin became the recipient of a collection of letters he had penned to his mother throughout World War II. After carrying out research and reading the letters, she discovered her father had spent three years in a prison camp in Italy. Later, she researched her mother’s war records and knew from conversations that she spent her time in Strathpeffer in the ATS and had indeed stood on the platform of what is now the Old Victorian Railway Station.

Although her parents did not meet until after the war, Lin was inspired to write a World War II novel using her father's life as a basis. Her research into Strathpeffer also proved to be very informative. The fictional novel is a romance, and the characters lead the way. The novel has reached many five-star reviews on Amazon.

The narrative centres on two principal figures, Ellie Brownlee and Harold Dean, whose romantic relationship began after leaving school. With war now a reality between them, Ellie tragically finds herself uprooted from home and separated from her family. In the meantime, Harold almost lost his life in Dunkirk. The enemy later captured him in Italy, and subsequently confined him to a prisoner of war camp.

This is a journey of discovery, but will they ever see each other again?

The signing of her novel, The Trail to Freedom, on the station platform represents a particularly touching and significant occasion for Lin.

We hope you'll join us to discover more about village life, enjoy a pleasant conversation and delve deeper into the book.
