Identifying wall tie corrosion in a building's masonry can be crucial for maintaining its structural integrity. Here are three key points to help you identify wall tie corrosion:

1. Staining or Rust Streaks: Look for signs of staining or rust streaks on the external masonry walls, particularly around the areas where wall ties are located. Corroded wall ties can release rust, which can discolor and stain the brickwork or stonework.

2. Bulging or Cracking Masonry: If you notice bulging or cracking in the masonry, it can be an indicator of wall tie corrosion. As the wall ties corrode and expand, they can exert pressure on the masonry, causing it to bulge or crack.

3. Loose or Missing Mortar Joints: Examine the mortar joints in the masonry. Corrosion can weaken the wall ties, leading to the loosening or even complete disintegration of mortar joints around the ties. This can result in visible gaps or missing mortar.

If you suspect wall tie corrosion, it's essential to consult with a structural engineer or a building professional who can assess the situation, determine the extent of the corrosion, and recommend appropriate remediation or repair measures to ensure the building's stability and safety.

Here’s some things to look out for if suspect woodworm.

1. Small Holes: Look for tiny round or oval holes, typically 1-2 millimeters in diameter, on the surface of the wood. These are exit holes created by adult woodworm beetles when they emerge from the wood.

2. Fine Powdery Dust: Check for fine, powdery sawdust or frass around the holes or on the wood's surface. This is a sign of recent woodworm activity, as the larvae create tunnels in the wood and push out this powdery waste.

3. Weak or Damaged Wood: Examine the affected wood for signs of weakness, crumbling, or structural damage. Woodworm larvae feed on wood, creating tunnels and weakening its integrity, which can lead to structural issues if left untreated.

If you suspect woodworm infestation, it's advisable to consult with a professional expert!
