It's coming up to that time, when I try to move the bigger pieces of furniture, to give a sweep behind. Smaller items are easy to move to vacuum, but dust gathers and I want it gone by Spring!

Helping to tidy up the house of an elderly lady the other day, I noticed most of the radiators were obstructed by furniture - chairs, coffee tables, and the like. When the room was re-arranged just a little, the whole house was suddenly warmer. With fuel costs going up, this is a very easy way to make the heating more effective.

Christmas decorations do not have to be messy. I saw a lovely table decoration of a glass bowl with three large baubles in it, very festive, no troublesome tinsel and easy to clear away. What's not to like.

We might think of Spring as a traditional time for cleaning, but now that the nights are drawing in, an easy task to do, could be to take a drawer and tidy or clear it while you sit in front of the television. Only one drawer is not too onerous, and makes the evening feel more productive.

Cleaning limescale from a kettle was a doddle with some soda crystals and some hot water. As I am in a soft water area, I had not needed to do this before, but when I was given a kettle it needed a good clean. Half a cup of soda crystals, with some hot water added poured into the kettle, a wash round with an old toothbrush for the sides, and left to soak for a while. Lovely and clean, and the dregs poured into the toilet cleaned that as well!

What a difference a fresh coat of paint can make to a room. I thought I would share a hint I was given by a decorator. Tie a piece of string across the paint tin, when it is opened, and use this to wipe any excess paint from your brush. The paint goes back into the tin. (I even found the string from opening a bag of bird seed was quite strong enough for this!)

Do you have lots of empty boxes lying around? I have discovered you can sell 'posh' boxes and shopping bags online these days. So, if you have something you were keeping to put your shoes or clothes back into, and you have worn these items so they no longer need the containers, try and sell the boxes and bags instead of keeping them. I have even seen empty bottles - perfume, port and so on, advertised. Great way to have a clear out!

While the weather is perking up, now is a great time to put the house plants outside for a touch of sunshine, and maybe a little rain to clean their leaves. It also provides an opportunity to clean round where they were. I need to clean the windowsills now!

Fed up with dusting and cleaning a particular item? Anytime can be a good time to sell or donate something you no longer use or love. If you wait until you are ready to move, it might all be a rush, but a clear out of unwanted stuff, can improve the spirits.

It's always a good idea to open the windows in the sunshine, but now we have more reason than before to do that. Trouble is, when I go close to the windows, I can see they need cleaning. Oh well, time for the newspaper and vinegar!

There is a campaign suggesting something I have been doing for years. To protect yourselves from unwanted nasties coming from a flushed toilet, put the lid down first. The water droplets can be sent up to six feet from a strong flush. I have a little note on my cistern - ' Lid down, then flush'. Can't hurt!

I really must find an old spray bottle. I have been cleaning mould from a windowsill and from round a bath, and used an old toothbrush with some bleach ( I used toilet cleaner) in a small plastic bowl (a re-used Christmas pud container). It would have been so much easier to spray a little on, and then scrub it off, but at least the mould has gone.
