Robinson’s Chimney Sweep

I’ve recently had the pleasure of The Coal Face getting in touch for their annual sweep and stove inspection. Once the sweep was completed a further investigation of the stove revealed it needed some love and attention, after consulting with the customer they were given some options and they chose a full refurbishment of the stove.

To do this job the stove was pulled from the fireplace and taken away so it could be fully stripped apart and refurbished.

The work included:
- Pulling the stove
- Removing each component from the stove
- Removing any scale and rope seal
- Fully sanding each component down to bare metal
- Painting each component until no metal shows and it has a matte black finish
- Re-roping the door and any other components where required
- Putting the stove back together
- Delivering the stove back to the customer
- Reinstalling the stove into the fireplace

All materials used:
- High Temperature Stove paint (600 degrees Celsius)
- Rope seal
- High Temperature black silicone (300 degrees Celsius)

2 stoves 1 house, had a customer get in touch about having both of their stoves swept so they are ready for the winter.

After inspecting the stoves it came apparent 1 of the stoves needed a new door rope, this was done after the customer was informed and agreed to having the door rope replaced.

Here is a great example of why having a camera inspection of your chimney and flue system is as important as having them swept.

In this scenario after attending a customers house their stove had an offset flue pipe. This meant using the traditional technique of a mirror and torch to check up the flue was not viable. In this case I chose to use a camera to inspect the flue system before proceeding with the sweep which led to the discovery that the flue adaptor was no longer connected to the offset flue pipe stopping me from sweeping and causing any further issues or damage. This was rectified first and the sweep undertaken before the customer was able to safely use the stove again.

Recently had the opportunity to do a half bull-nose on a slate hearth for a customer, this process helps to prevent any chips to the edge of the slate hearth over time and helps to bring everything together, this is a great option for anybody who has a freestanding stove in their home.

Once the slate hearth is installed it is gone over with a coat of slate oil to help bring the definition of the stone out and to prevent any scuffs and scratches to the Hearth.

Once the sweep is complete we can see all the soot that has collected over a year of use, this soot and tar can lead to chimney fires so ensure your chimney is swept yearly.

Some before, during and after photos of a full stove door restoration for a customer.

After going to the customers house to install a new glass and handle it became apparent that all the screws on the glass clips had been rounded and could not be removed at the job.

As the screws could not be removed at the job I then took the stove door with me so I could then remove the old screws and then tap and die the door so new screws and clips could be installed.

Services included:
- Old screws removed
- new holes tap and die
- Stove door painted
- Glass rope seal replaced
- Door rope seal replaced
- New glass installed
- New Stove door handle installed
- Air control handle sanded and polished to remove all scale

Once returning to the job at a later date to install the refurbished door the customer was given the option to have their stove painted as well so the door and stove itself would match.

Before and after photos of a Saturday morning sweep and refurb of this Firefox 5 stove. The sweep and service was for a customer who had recently moved into his home and had enquired about a sweep and a survey to check which parts needed repaired and replaced to make the stove safe.

After further inspection it was discovered that the VIT pipe had deteriorated and did not have an adaptor on to the flexi twin wall liner.

Full services Included:

- Stove completely emptied and cleaned
- Rear firebrick repair
- Stove repainted
- Door glass and clips replaced
- Door rope seal replaced
- Door handle Replaced
- VIT pipe measured, cut and replaced
- Flue adaptor installed
- Full sweep
- Full camera Inspection before and after

The stove door was picked up earlier in the week and repaired ready for Saturday. Once arriving on Saturday every other service was carried out until completion.

Once the services were completed all appropriate tests were carried out to ensure that the stove and flue were in working order.

I’ve recently had the pleasure of visiting a local training centre to learn more on installing stoves and had the chance to do a full install from the Slate Hearth from M.A.C. Metalcraft Ltd the heat shield from Midtherm Flue Systems the twin wall flue system from Mi-Flues Limited, the stove below is Hamer Fires brand new basset 5 stove and what a stove it is, from a sweeps perspective it’s an absolute dream to work with, there was also a new Recoheat installed in the flue system, a video review on the Hamer Fires basset 5 stove and the Recoheat will soon follow this post.
