Sometimes the little jobs are the best ones ☕🔧

While carrying out a swimming pool heat pump service for an elderly customer, I was asked if I could quickly swap over a broken outside tap.

They already had the new tap there, so it was only a small job and took about 30 seconds.

Payment terms were agreed on site: one cup of coffee.

Fair deal, I reckon.

It’s not always about the big installs, expensive repairs, or complicated fault finding. Sometimes it’s just about helping someone out with something simple while you’re already there.

New tap fitted.
Heat pump serviced.
Coffee received.
Everyone happy.

That’s a successful visit in my book.

Sometimes in this trade, the problem is simple…

“I need a bit more light.”

The solution, however, is apparently to tape your phone to your head and carry on wiring up an isolator like some kind of budget Iron Man 🔦😂

To be fair, it worked.

One thing about site work is you’re constantly adapting. Awkward corners, poor lighting, tight spaces, missing hands, unexpected problems — and somehow you always end up finding a way to get the job done.

Sometimes that means specialist tools.

Sometimes that means years of experience.

And sometimes… it means strapping an iPhone to your forehead and cracking on.

Simple problem. Massively over-engineered solution.
Exactly how we like it.

A quick clip from a swimming pool heat pump heat exchanger failure 💦

This one appears to have split, most likely due to water being left inside the heat exchanger during winterisation. When water freezes, it expands, and unfortunately that pressure can be enough to crack or split components internally.

It’s one of those faults that can happen quietly over winter and only really shows itself when the system is brought back into use.

Pool heat pumps are fantastic when they’re looked after properly, but they do need the right preparation before cold weather hits — especially if the pool is being shut down for the season.

A proper winterisation should include draining down the heat pump and associated pipework correctly, helping protect the heat exchanger from frost damage.

Not the nicest fault to find, but a useful reminder of why winter checks and seasonal maintenance are so important.

Ever wondered why trades say “bell it out” when checking cables?

It’s one of those old-school trade phrases that has stuck around.

These days, we normally stick a meter on continuity, touch the probes together, and wait for the familiar beep. But before modern meters made everything neat and digital, a simple continuity tester could be made using a battery, a couple of leads, and an actual bell or buzzer.

If the cable or circuit was continuous, the current flowed and the bell rang.

If it stayed silent, you had a break, wrong core, loose connection, or an open circuit.

So when someone says they’re going to “bell it out”, it originally meant they were literally testing the circuit with a bell.

Same principle, different noise.

Obviously, this is only for safely isolated circuits — don’t go sticking continuity testers on live electrics unless you want the magic smoke to come out. 😅

It’s funny how many phrases in the trade come from tools and methods that most of us barely use anymore, but the wording lives on.

Not all heat pumps live outside 👀

This is a Daikin Altherma heat pump hot water tank — a really clever bit of kit that uses ambient air through ducting to produce hot water.

Instead of relying on a big electric boiler pulling heavy power, this system uses heat pump technology to make hot water far more efficiently.

On this job, the customer was originally looking at installing a 50 amp electric boiler, but this was a much smarter option — saving them a lot of money on the install requirements and helping keep running costs down too.

Another clever feature with these units is that, with the right ducting setup, they can even be configured to provide a bit of cooling to certain areas while producing hot water. Obviously it needs to be designed properly, but it’s a great example of how versatile heat pump technology can be.

Efficient hot water, lower electrical demand, and a much neater solution all round.

And that’s another happy heat pump 🔥🌍

It’s not just about what’s going on inside the machine… 👀

When we carry out a heat pump service, we always do our best to leave the unit looking as presentable as possible too.

Of course, the main part of any service is making sure the system is operating correctly, checking the condition of the unit, looking over the components, making sure airflow is good, and spotting any potential issues before they become bigger problems.

But we also think the outside matters.

The fascia, fan grilles, casing, and visible exterior all get attention where possible — because nobody wants a heat pump sat outside their home looking tired, green and unloved.

A clean unit doesn’t just look better, it also helps keep airflow clear and gives us a much better view of the overall condition of the system.

This Mitsubishi Ecodan came up much better after a bit of care and attention. A proper service should be more than just a quick look and a tick sheet — it should leave the customer feeling like the system has actually been looked after.

Small details matter.
Clean kit, tidy work, happy heat pumps.

Big transformation on this one 🔥❄️⚡

This project has been a proper full-house upgrade from start to finish.

The property was previously running on an old oil boiler setup, with traditional pipework and radiators throughout. The aim was to move the house towards a cleaner, smarter, more controllable setup — and this is where we ended up.

We installed 6 x WiFi enabled Fujitsu Airstage air conditioning units across the property, giving the customer heating and cooling throughout the house, all with modern controls and room-by-room comfort.

The old hot water setup was also upgraded, and after a few conversations we managed to convince the client to go with a Daikin Altherma hot water heat pump cylinder rather than a standard electric boiler — definitely the better long-term option in our opinion.

Alongside the air conditioning and hot water upgrades, the property has also had the electrical side brought up to suit the new setup, including the new consumer unit, EV charger provision, and future-proofing for solar.

This has been one of those jobs where you really see the property change as the project moves along. Old kit out, new kit in, and a much more modern way of heating, cooling and running the home.

And we’re not finished yet…

We’ll be back in the next week or two to install another single split system into the customer’s new garden room, so there’s still one more chapter to go on this one.

Massive thanks to the customer for trusting us with the project — and for being open to the better hot water option in the end 👌

6 happy air cons, 1 happy Daikin hot water heat pump… and soon to be 1 happy garden room.

Every now and then, the job decides what face the inhibitor bottle gets.

Smiley face if all is well.
Frowny face if the system’s been behaving like a diva.

No idea why I started doing it, but now it happens every single time.

Sometimes the job is fault finding, sometimes it’s compressor swaps… and sometimes it’s a balancing act over a swimming pool.

This one was a compressor replacement in a Calorex dehumidifier, which meant getting up there, getting the torch on it, and trying not to think too much about how little room there was to stand.

At one point I had one leg dangling off the ladder just to keep my balance, with the very thin ledge below doing its absolute best not to fill me with confidence.

So while I was brazing away, I was also quietly praying I didn’t end up in the pool.

Compressor went in.
Brazing done.
Dignity mostly intact.
Pool entry avoided.

Not every part of the job is glamorous… but it does keep things interesting.

A little bit of evening prep goes a long way. 🔧

If I’ve got the time, I like to get bits like this prepped before I get to site.

Here I’m putting together a volumiser for a heat pump system. It might only save 5–10 minutes, but that’s 5–10 minutes less spent cutting, cleaning and assembling in the customer’s house.

For me, it’s worth doing.

Anything that helps make the install smoother, tidier, and less of an inconvenience for the customer is a win. A lot of the job is what happens on site… but a good bit of planning and prep beforehand makes a big difference too.

Also, yes, the jazzy socks are part of the process.
