What do you actually get with a commercial pest control contract? We've put it in one short video.

A survey of your whole site. Routine visits based on your site's risk, not a one-size-fits-all number. Professional-grade bait in secured, numbered stations, checked every visit. A written record you can show an inspector, auditor or landlord. And help between visits when you need it.

Every site is different, so every contract is too. Book a survey and we'll give you a written quote.

When was the last time you properly looked at your bin store?

At commercial premises, it's where most pest problems begin. Overflowing bins, bags left on the floor, spills, and old pallets give rats everything they need, right next to your building. Heading into winter, it's worth an hour of anyone's time.

Our new guide covers what to check, what to look out for, and why shared yards need a shared plan: https://mdpestcontrolsolutions.co.uk/bin-stores-and-yards-at-commercial-premises-before-winter/

Landlords: a pest problem found in the first month of a tenancy is a headache for everyone.

The void period is the time to check and proof. The property's empty, every room is accessible, and you can close gaps like damaged air bricks and holes around pipes before anyone moves in. Keep a record too, because who deals with pests during a tenancy often comes down to the cause and the tenancy agreement.

🐀 Rat Control in Newton-le-Willows (WA12) 🏡

A good reminder of why a thorough inspection is so important when dealing with rats!

On our third visit, all signs of activity appeared to have stopped, and all treatment measures were uplifted. The customer was happy, and we were preparing to arrange proofing work.

But during one final check of the property, I spotted something that changed everything… 👀 A rat’s tail disappearing back into the original above-ground access point!

The lesson? No visible activity doesn't always mean the problem is fully resolved. Identifying entry points and carrying out appropriate proofing are crucial to helping prevent rats from returning.

Although I always aim to save customers money, I’d rather identify an ongoing issue now than leave a problem behind. The customer was happy to proceed with an additional visit at a discounted rate.

At MD Pest Control Solutions, we go beyond treating the symptoms to help tackle the cause. 💪

Food business owners: autumn is when rats start moving towards warm kitchens and easy food.

The fix starts in the yard. Bins closed and emptied, back doors that shut properly, drains covered, and gaps around pipes sealed. Inside, keep stock off the floor and rotate it so nothing sits untouched.

And keep your records ready every day. Food hygiene inspections are unannounced, and a clear pest file shows you're on top of it.

Our new guide covers what to check this month and how professional rodent control works in a food business: https://mdpestcontrolsolutions.co.uk/rodents-in-food-premises-staying-ahead-of-the-autumn-move-indoors/

A quiet week after pest treatment is good news, but it isn't proof the job's done. And a single sighting isn't proof it's failed either.

That's why a simple record between visits helps so much. Note when and where you saw something, what it was, and anything that's changed at home, like a leak or building work. Leave our bait stations and monitors where they are, and tell us if you've used any other products.

We've put together a guide to what to record between follow-up visits and when to call us sooner: https://mdpestcontrolsolutions.co.uk/after-pest-treatment-recording-activity-between-follow-up-visits/

Seen a rat in the garden? It doesn't mean your garden is dirty. It means something there is supplying food, water, cover and a route.

The bird feeder is usually the food. Mostly the seed scattered on the ground underneath it, which is a reliable nightly meal in a fixed location, though rats climb well enough to reach the feeder itself too. If you've already got rats, our advice is to stop feeding the birds completely until the problem is dealt with, then start again with a tray underneath and the ground kept clear.

The cover is usually decking. The void under a raised deck is dry, warm and impossible to inspect, and it's where we find burrows more often than anywhere else.

On bait: rodenticide is the right tool for most rat jobs and we use it every week. The issue is how it gets used. Shop-bought bait is deliberately weaker than professional product, so rats often take a sub-lethal dose, which is exactly what breeds resistance. And loose bait in an open position is reachable by hedgehogs, dogs and ground-feeding birds. Used properly, in secured tamper-resistant stations placed on the runs after a survey, none of that applies. That's the difference a professional makes.

It's that time of year, jumpers come down from the loft and there are holes in them.

Worth knowing: the adult moths you see flying about can't actually eat. They have no functioning mouthparts. All the damage is done by larvae, and it was done months ago in the dark.

So the holes you found this week are historic. The question is where the larvae are now.

Usually it's the carpet under the wardrobe or the bed, or that last few inches of carpet tucked under the skirting board. And in older St Helens terraces there's one we find again and again, an old bird nest sitting in a blocked-off chimney. Feathers are keratin, so it's a permanent food supply inside the wall, and it's why some bedrooms keep getting reinfested no matter how much they're cleaned.

Full post covers carpet beetles too, plus what actually works (60°C wash, freezing at -18°C for 72 hours, proper edge vacuuming) and what doesn't (moth balls, lavender).

Think you have seen a cockroach in the kitchen? Start with the evidence, rather than a spray bought in a hurry.

Note where and when it appeared. Keep a clear photograph if you can take one safely, and explain whether there have been other sightings. The type of insect and the conditions around it affect the assessment.

Protect food and clear accessible spills, but ask before moving appliances or emptying cupboards into other rooms. Tell the pest controller about any treatment products you have already used so the next step can be planned properly.
