This is why you you pay a professional to sweep your chimney and check your stove. Look carefully, the rear blanking plate on the stove had broken and fallen away from this stove and you can see the brick wall behind. This means there is a high likelihood of combustion gasses entering the room, including carbon monoxide... A lucky customer!

Ban on wood stoves? Here's the truth! The Government strategy summarises actions to reduce emissions from domestic burning, clearly identifying there is no intention to ban wood burning stoves.

Here are the key points:
Legislate to prohibit sale of the most polluting fuels.
Ensure that only the cleanest stoves are available for sale by 2022.
Give new powers to local authorities to take action in areas of high pollution, bringing legislation into the 21st century with more flexible, proportionate enforcement powers.
Work with industry to identify an appropriate test standard for new solid fuels entering the market.
Ensure that consumers understand what they can do to reduce their impact from burning.
Simples...

The number of children going to A&E with carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning has spiked by more than 1,000%. This data was released after project SHOUT, a national campaign to raise awareness of the dangers of CO poisoning, sent NHS trusts around the country a Freedom of Information request. The chemical, which commonly comes from gas and oil burners, log burners and open fires, was responsible for 500 cases nationwide last year. Around 50 people across the country die each year as a result of poisoning. Be safe - have a CO alarm in your home.

This week is Chimney Fire Safety Week.

Last year Hampshire had 158 chimney fires and Wilts and Dorset 245.

For your own safety and that of your family, make sure any chimneys you use are at least swept once a year (some may require more though).

Please share this and hopefully the amount of chimney fires will continue their downward trend.

Tried to light your fire/stove this week and had smoke come back in the room? If so, read on.

We've had a few customers worrying that they have blocked chimneys when they try to light their fires/stoves, but come back in the room, even when they've been recently swept. In these cases, the chimney stack is often on an external wall.

If there is no obvious reason for a blockage (e.g. birds nest), then the cause is most likely the cold weather. It penetrates the stack/flue and the hot gasses from the fire are not sufficient to "punch" through the weight of the cold air sitting above.

The solution is to make sure you set a really good fire to start with. Use rolled up knotted new papers, fire lighters and lots of dry kindling and ensure you get a strong flame from the outset. If you allow the flame to become weak or go out, the smoke will come back in the room.

Enjoy your fires:-)

Picture of an unsafe installation - note the gap between the metal flue pipe and the masonry/concrete flue. Soot can get trapped and either catch fire or discharge carbon monoxide through the ineffective seal!

This week is Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week.

Please test your alarms and if you don't have one in your house and any form of combustion occurs (gas, oil coal, wood etc), you really should get one and position it in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. At a cost of £15 upwards, its a cheap insurance policy. So why wouldn't you?

WHICH has recently published an article about which alarms to avoid. http://www.which.co.uk/news/2016/10/unsafe-carbon-monoxide-detectors-named-and-shamed-by-which-454153/

It is a silent killer. Don't be its next victim...
