Yesterday a comment was made "Allison isn't doing her job properly". As a cleaner or any employed or self employed person it's not something you want to hear. I've been self employed for nearly 3 years and never had a complaint.
However, from one of my old regular customers that comment astonished me. Especially since it wasn't their home.
The context here is that the room where my work was judged, I don't clean as requested by the actual client. I may give it a light hoover and I mean light to get rid of surface dust however it isn't an area that is cleaned.
My time is spent concentrating on other areas.
But that comment "Allison isn't doing her job properly" really got to me.
-So I'm not doing my job properly by taking care of the garden and plants when you're away as well as my cleaning duties.
-I'm not doing my job properly when I feed and water and take care of your pets including cleaning up poo and cleaning up wee
- not doing my job properly when I'm wiping urine and poo off walls.
-I'm not doing my job properly when I fight the mould around windows and doors even if I don't have time to.
-im not doing my job properly when I'm chiseling away years and years worth of limescale.
-im not doing my job properly when I'm listening to you chatter about how crap your day, week or year has been.....
-im not doing my job properly when I'm cleaning up the mess and clutter that your children have made just so I can clean. When we're polishing toothbrushes and fighting bacteria. When we're doing your dishes when it's not what we usually do. Folding clothes or putting a load of washing on.
I'm clearly not doing my job properly because I'm not doing extras that I don't get paid for
There is so much I, we do that you don't even acknowledge or notice.
We don't want Tips, presents or random things, or fake reviews and followers, What we as a collective of cleaners and self employed people who actually work their asses off, who don't get help at home, and some of us are barely making ends meet but we work our asses off to please you.
We, "WE" would like genuine gratitude. GENUINE Gratitude, not a mindless comment because you had a bad day.
Be kind and be mindful and don't upset the cleaner.
