A regular garden I do, that is historically very wet behind this beech hedge.
This year it is very dry and I was surprised to see as much activity as there was. 4 moles caught on 1st trap check.

An area of mole activity with no obvious evidence of how the mole had got here until I discovered a vertical tunnel from another tunnel system much deeper underground.

A couple of lawns that are currently still damp enough to pull moles in for the earth worm. Both gardens had just the one female mole.

A garden that regularly has moles in this area, but not this spring, the moles are by a water course this year. But I thought I would walk over the area normally used by moles and as you can see, you can almost follow the old tunnels by the sunken, cracked lawn surface. And it appears that field voles are now the only residents judging from the number of their little pop-up holes.

Land that was under water last year for any length of time lost a lot of grass cover. And now with this very dry weather, this is the result on many areas of farm land that never recovered from being submerged.

What a difference a few weeks without rain in the growing season makes.
From late spring last year to early spring this year had been my most productive mole catching period ever, and it looked like it was going to continue, till it stopped raining and summer temperatures arrived a few weeks ago.
This block of land caught 144 moles last July, nothing spectacular, but that was just annual control measure numbers. This year I caught 31 and had to work hard to find any dampish areas worth trapping.

A garden with a historic wet spot in the middle, probably a cracked or blocked drain. I do this property every year, sometimes a few times each year. So far my 4 traps have caught 6 males and 1 female. Every time I call in there's another 1 or 2 caught.
The wet feeding area is dragging in moles from other areas.

This springs exceptionally dry and warm weather has triggered the phone calls for " I've got a wasp nest" much sooner than last years washout spring. Started at the beginning of April.
But it's still too early to have any wasps nests of any size worth going out to treat.
All calls for wasp nests or swarms of wasps? have turned out to be solitary bees. I don't even bother going to check, but get pictures sent so I can identify.
There are some people who are extremely vigilant for wasp nests each year because of previously ignoring a summer nest and then having a house full of wasps in the autumn.
One customer has sent me a picture of a small starter nest found in their loft, less than a dozen eggs laid and only the queen wasp about. I'll sort it out in another few weeks.

Moles are shedding their winter coats about a month earlier this year. Normally it's June, but the good spring weather seems to have triggered them to moult sooner.

Trapping some spring cereal fields.
The planted areas are like concrete, I'm struggling to get a 8 mm probe in to locate the tunnels. But where there is any headland around the fields, I can get traps in. Here the tunnel runs parallel with the sown ground, my probe is in the tunnel, and only a few inches down. Note how the mole pushes out molehills to the side, rather than straight up. It uses the routes of least resistance to get rid of the excavated soil.

Normally if there's a trampoline in a garden, then it's a good place to check out for mole activity as the shade prevents the ground from drying out too quickly.
But here the whole garden is very dry because of lack of rain, so no moles, but a very clever dog that knows what to do in hot weather.
