Bournemouth’s Hidden Drainage Network: How Sewers, Pumping Stations and Sea Outfalls Work Along the South Coast.

Most of us never think about what happens after we flush the toilet or when rainwater disappears down a road drain.
But in Bournemouth, the drainage network is surprisingly interesting. From clifftop homes and seafront businesses to pumping stations, storm tanks, chines and sea outfalls, there is a lot going on beneath the town to keep everything moving.
We’ve written a local guide explaining how Bournemouth’s hidden drainage and sewer systems work, including why pumping stations are needed, what beach outfalls actually do, and why heavy rain can affect water quality along the coast.

Bournemouth is known for its beaches, cliffs, chines and sea views, but beneath the town is a busy drainage network that most people only think about when

Great to see this in full swing 🌱

We were glad to support Cornerstone Patch with a small contribution towards compost this season. It’s a brilliant local project and the work the volunteers put in really shows.

Spaces like this don’t just grow food, they bring people together and give something back to the community, which is something we’re always keen to support where we can.

If anyone local has a bit of spare time or wants to get involved, definitely worth reaching out to them.

🌸 It’s been a busy and beautiful start to spring in the garden 🌱

👩‍🌾 Huge thanks to our amazing volunteers who give their time, energy, and care to keep everything growing — we couldn’t do it without you!

🌱 We’re also so grateful to those supporting us in other ways. A special shoutout to for their generous donation, which has funded our compost and is helping us continue another year of sowing and growing for the community

🌿 If you’d like to support the garden — whether through time, donations, or resources — we’d love to hear from you. Get in touch! 💫

These images show the scale of flooding seen across Dorset over the last few weeks.
A combination of prolonged rainfall, saturated ground, rising water levels and overwhelmed drainage left areas affected that have never flooded before.

Winter weather can be tough on your drains.

Fallen leaves, debris, and heavy rain can quickly build up and lead to slow drainage or blockages.

If you’re noticing water backing up, bad smells, or overflowing gullies, it’s best to get it sorted early before it turns into a bigger problem.

Our team is on hand to keep things flowing through the colder months.

Planning a home extension?

Before you dig, it’s important to know exactly where your drains run.

Drain mapping shows the location and direction of underground pipework, helping you avoid costly surprises, delays, or damage once work starts.

It’s a simple step that can save a lot of stress later on.

If you’re extending, building, or redesigning your property, we can help.
