With balconies like this one with steels above your head, pigeons will commonly use the ledges of the steels to roost and nest on as they provide the direct head cover they need. In these situations the answer is to just net off the steels rather than the whole balcony, which can still be left open for enjoyment. This one was completed by Mark Page and Shane Hewitt from Pest Professionals this week.

Another neat balcony netting job completed by technicians Mark Page and Shane Hewitt. Where the gaps in the balustrade rails are easily big enough for pigeons to get through like here, the net obviously needs to come right down to floor level. If we can fix it outside of the balustrade, as we have been able to here, we will.

Animal Magic was a great children's series, aired from 1962 to 1983. Hosted by Johnny Morris, the show combined humorous voiceovers for animals at Bristol Zoo with educational content. Morris's co-presenters included Gerald Durrell, Terry Nutkins, and more, each bringing unique expertise.

In the early 1980s, the show incorporated new video effects, adding a fresh twist. Notable animal stars included Dotty the ring-tailed lemur, Gemini the sea lion, and parrots Cocky and Brolly.

Although discontinued in 1983, Animal Magic's legacy continued with The Really Wild Show in 1986. The series was also enjoyed internationally, airing in Australia, New Zealand, and Singapore. Its iconic theme tune, "Las Vegas," remains memorable.

Here's a new one for us. A customer send in this picture of these strange looking insects appearing his utility room. They are what's known as Amphipoda, known as amphipods.
These small shrimp-like animals occasionally appear in peoples' homes.
Their natural habitat is under low growing vegetation in conditions of high humidity and they are related to shore dwelling amphipods, commonly called beach fleas.
The most likely explanation for them being found in buildings is that periods of excessive rainfall or waterlogging of the soil causes them to seek a drier environment.
They invade buildings by jumping through windows or crawling over thresholds. However, having escaped too-wet conditions, domestic conditions prove too dry for them and therefore
they desiccate and die. After death their bodies become bright pink.

It was finger numbing work for our technician Mark Page on this spiking job for the council in Swanley this week. Pigeon spiking is a good solution when you want to keep these birds away from leading edges to stop them fouling off them onto the ground and people below. In this case Mark secured some 140m of wide P4 stainless steel pigeon spikes to the outer perimeter of a parapet on the High Street. The polycarbonate base is secured using clear-drying, all-weather power silicone adhesive.

Here’s a nice little creature sent in by one of our customers today …. We reckon it’s a species of parasitic wasp, possibly belonging to the genus Ophion in the family Ichneumonidae. They parasitize the larval stages of other insects, which is nice…

Rats can be very destructive indeed if they think it's worth it. Their teeth never stop growing and they have to gnaw to keep them down - otherwise they can over-grow and prevent them from being able to eat. They can go through pointing if they need to, and as you can see from the picture, can make short work of plastic refuse bins. They will readily live in the drains but if there's an external food source will often come out at night. The second picture shows what to look for around your drains if you have a suspected rat issue - you can see clearly how they have created access burrows.
