A wasp nest in my loft

I called The Wasp Guys after being let down by another company who were charging twice the price to deal with a wasp nest in my loft. Robbie arrived, explained what he would do, got his gear on, got into the loft and dealt with the nest, all in about 15 minutes and was also very polite and friendly. The Wasp Guys are a local, family run business so I was very happy to support them but they are also clearly experts in their field, reasonably priced and genuinely nice people too and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to anyone needing a wasp nest dealt with.

Another bleak week weather wise. This is great for our wasps and all other insects as they need plenty of water to thrive.
Nests are growing rapidly and we are seeing the odd one as big as a honeydew melon, but most are still tennis ball size.
Once established the queen will lay hundreds of eggs a week, so it won’t be long before summers most annoying insect will be out in abundance.

SUMMER’S HERE

It’s that time of year again.

With the warmer weather we have the awakening of many insects.

The first picture is of a bee swarm.

We are coming into swarm season.

When a hive is strong and starting to become overpopulated the queen will produce a new queen. She will then leave the existing hive with half the bees and search for a new home .
If you see a swarm settle, don’t panic. They will be docile and not a threat.
Scouts will be sent out to look for a permanent home and the swarm will generally leave within 48 hours.
If they are of concern to you then we can arrange for a beekeeper to come and re-home them.
Please do not use pesticides on them or get someone in to kill them. 
Bees are generally placid and are of massive value to our ecosystem.

The second picture is a wasp nest.

Wasps are also an asset to the ecosystem as they are a natural pesticide and get rid of insects that eat flowers and crops.
Often described as the farmers and gardeners friend.

Unlike the bee though, the wasp can be extremely aggressive and we would always recommend you have a nest removed from your home.
The majority of queen wasps have now woken from hibernation and are busying themselves making new nests before producing 1000,s of offspring throughout the summer.

Note: Wasps don’t re-inhabit old nests. They always start from scratch.

We thought the spate of cold weather would have killed off the queens who woke earliest from hibernation, but it would appear these resilient little insects have battled through.
This picture shows a queen nest building.
(They do not re-inhabit old nests)
This would have taken her 2-4 weeks to get this far.
Soon she’ll create hexagonal cells and start laying the first eggs.
Once the first helpers aid in getting the nest to a tennis ball size the queen will no longer leave the nest and will lay hundreds of eggs daily.

We spotted our first two queens today.
After emerging from hibernation the queens need to feed to build up their strength after months of sleeping. They will then start looking for somewhere to build their nest. They never re-inhabit an old nest, they always start from scratch. It will take the queen 4-6 weeks to build a golf ball sized nest. She will then start to lay a few eggs. When hatched the first few wasps will help the queen with nest building. Once tennis ball size the queen will lay up to 100 eggs a day and the nest will rapidly grow producing 10’s of 1000’s of wasps before dying out when winter comes.

Queens will be waking from hibernating as soon as the weather warms up.
We always recommend having nests removed from your home, but if nests are away from buildings and danger it’s good to leave our waspy friends alone. They are an integral part of the ecosystem.

As we come towards the end of wasp season, we can’t 100% guarantee all wasps will be killed off.
The new queens being produced behave very differently to the other wasps and may already have hidden themselves in wall cavities or loft spaces.
We can guarantee as always to kill the nest, but not the queens that have already departed.
Dec 23rd was our final call out last year for an active nest.
Milder winters mean nests are surviving longer.
🤞crossed for a very cold November to kill them off.

PANIC BUY WASP NEST REMOVAL

Due to the fact that The UK no longer has any lorry drivers or petrol, we strongly suggest you book (or double book) your wasp nest removal ASAP, as The Wasp Guys Surrey 07761 232470 only have enough powder for the rest of the year.
Panic buy and we could run out by the end of the month.

It’s that time of year as we approach Autumn, that wasps become their most aggressive and annoying. September and October are our busiest time of the year as people are more likely to be stung during the next couple of months.
Word of advice: If you have fruit trees in your garden it is best to clear up any fallen fruit. Wasps naturally have a sweet tooth and will be attracted to all types of fruit.
Fermenting fruits have the same effect on wasps as alcohol does on humans, and wasps do like to get drunk 🥴.
I'm sure some just get a bit loud and giggly, but unfortunately some will become unnecessarily aggressive and become even more troublesome than normal.
