Defra has pledged to review mole traps as part of the Government’s Animal Welfare Strategy 🐾 BPCA has responded by surveying the sector to make sure professional pest management is properly represented.

The message from members was clear 📣 There are no realistic alternatives to trapping moles in many situations.

But there are genuine welfare concerns around cheap, low-quality traps being widely available to the public.

Good regulation should remove unsuitable traps from the market without taking essential tools away from trained professionals.

Dry April has been 'very tough', says farmer

A farmer says he has found business "very tough" during the third driest April ever recorded in East Anglia.

Luke Abblitt farms 400 acres (162ha) of wheat, barley and potatoes at Daintree Farm in Ramsey St Mary's, in the Cambridgeshire Fens, and was hoping to sell his crop of early planted potatoes directly to consumers.

However, he said his yield of potatoes - both in terms of the amount of harvest and size of the potato - was smaller due to the lack of rain this spring.

Abblitt said: "We need rain - they need moisture to grow, they need to lock the nutrients in the soil, but at the minute we're just not getting it."

These stunning images were taken by BMCR member, Sean McManus, of Kidlandlee in the high hills of the Coquet Valley in Northumberland

Sean says: "What a fabulous place to work catching moles! I cleared over 150 mole hills so that the grass can be cut round the holiday cottages and estate without damaging the mowers. Now the moles have finally started to show themselves, I estimate there have been 30 to 40..."

Great work Sean (and we're very envious of your "office"!)

Morning all, hope your bank holidays were lovely!

Time for a health and safety moment. It is still very hot this week so please take care 🌡️☀️ Add heat to your risk assessments, and avoid working in bee suits, in attics and other hot spaces. If it can't be avoided, implement strict safety controls, ie working in the cooler hours, regular breaks, using a fan to circulate air.

An attic can easily exceed 40°C–50°C when the outside temperature is 30°C. There is a severe risk of heat exhaustion, dehydration, or heat stroke.

Stay hydrated and safe, please!

Farmers push back on plans to bring back golden eagles

Farmers must not be sidelined in plans to reintroduce golden eagles to northern England, the NFU has warned, as the government commits £1 million to the project with releases possible as early as next year.

The proposal, part of Defra’s “Wild Again: Restoring England’s Wildlife” campaign, aims to explore the return of the iconic bird of prey to areas where it has long been absent. Golden eagles were once native to England but disappeared due to persecution and habitat loss.
