🏆Drum roll for Jason Sutherland from JSPC Pest Solutions , our May Installer of the Month winner! We loved this one, its text book perfect and can not be faulted at all!🏆
Jason’s winning entry featured a fantastic gull proofing job using Defender Curved Ridge Bird Spikes, with careful cleaning, stubborn lichen removal and proper surface preparation before the spikes were fitted.

A big thank you to our guest judge Chris Woollam from Nurture Pest Control, with expert input from Gareth Tonen, for taking the time out to judge over 19 entries this month

‘It was the preparation work involved that really stood out to me. It’s something I’ve always strongly believed in within my own work, because the difference good preparation makes to the longevity of an install is massive. There was clearly a lot of wire brushing and surface preparation carried out before the spikes were installed, and that attention to detail is what made the entry stand out above the rest for me.’

Behind every Defender Bird Spike is a fair bit of practical bird control knowledge, and much of that comes straight from David Jones.

Before Jones and Son and Defender Bird Spikes, David worked as a bird controller himself, dealing with real sites, real bird problems and all the awkward little details that never quite fit neatly into a textbook. That hands on experience still shapes the way our products are designed, tested and recommended today.

It also means that here in the office, if a customer has a tricky ledge, an unusual roofline, a confusing chimney pot, a solar panel question or a job where the best product choice is not immediately obvious, we can tap into David’s experience and get practical advice from someone who has been there, fitted it, adjusted it and probably invented a better way of doing it.

That is one of the lovely things about being a UK manufacturer. We are not just reading from a product sheet. We know our products, we know how they are used and we have decades of real bird control experience sitting right here in the building.

Defender Jaws put to the test 👀🐦☀️

A big thank you to Chris Venables from Venables Pest Control for sending us this brilliant footage of our new Defender Jaws Solar Panel Pigeon Excluder in action.
Chris has been thoroughly testing Jaws and, as you can hear in the video, even fitting it one handed is “still pretty damn quick” 🙌

In the right situation, on solar panels with a 30 mm or 35 mm frame, Defender Jaws can literally halve installation time. No drilling, no glue, no clips, just a smart snap on system designed to create a neat, secure barrier that stops pigeons getting underneath solar panels.

Chris proofed two sets of panels in around 30 to 35 minutes. Now that is speedy work ⚡

What a month for Defender Installer of the Month! ☀️🐦
We have had 19 fantastic entries for May, and we want to heartily thank each and every one of you for taking the time to send in such brilliant examples of your work featuring Defender Bird Spikes.

This month has brought us some fab installs using our new Defender Jaws, along with plenty of trusted favourites including Gull Spikes, Extra Wide Spikes, Wide Plastic Spikes, Defender Thistle and Irritators.

The standard has been seriously impressive, so we are rather glad the decision is out of our hands this time! 😅

Remember, for May, we at Defender Bird Spikes have no say in who takes the trophy. It is all down to the wonderful Chris Woollam, who will be using his wealth of experience to look through the entries and choose this month’s winner. Today we are showcasing Summit Pest Control as our latest Installer of the Month entry ☀️

This smart bit of bird proofing was carried out by installer Danny Buxton on a residential building in Bushey, Hertfordshire, where pigeons had been roosting along the roofline and causing a rather unpleasant mess below 🐦💩

When pigeons perch on the edge of a roof, parapet or dormer, the problem is not just where they sit. Birds will often foul just before landing, or stand along the edge and leave guano over the side. No surprise really, as they don’t fancy standing in their own mess either!

The result for the property owner can be a quick build up of guano on paths, patios, cars and other surfaces below. Not only is this unhygienic, but pigeon guano is acidic, which means it can damage paintwork and surfaces over time. It can also create a serious slip hazard underfoot, especially when wet.

Summit Pest Control proofed this one beautifully, using a post and wire system along the roof parapets, with Defender Wide Stainless Steel Bird Spikes fitted to the outside edge of the dormers and front roof edge. A neat, practical solution that helps stop pigeons perching and fouling over the edge, while still allowing open roof space behind them.

That is exactly the kind of bird proofing we like to see. Humane, effective and considered. We believe in living in harmony with birds, moving them away from problem areas without causing harm or distress 🌿

Lock, slide and finish the run 🦈☀️

Defender Jaws has been designed to make solar panel pigeon proofing quicker, neater and easier for installers working around the full solar panel array.

The installer locks the reversable Jaw strip onto a 30 mm or 35 mm solar panel. This can then be slid along the panel side so it lines up perfectly with the next section leaving no gaps. The installer can simply work around the full perimeter with a secure and consistent finish.

This simple slide and lock function is one of the reasons Defender Jaws is such a practical choice for solar panel bird proofing, especially on longer runs. Each section is designed to sit securely in place and marry up with the next, helping to create a tidy barrier with no gaps for pigeons to sneak through 🐦

This afternoons entry to Defender Bird Spikes installer of the month is from Gareth at Pest & Property Solutions Limited ☀️ This job is a super example of how neat solar panel pigeon proofing should be done 👏

Gareth has installed our Defender Jaws system around the panels, creating discreet and long lasting protection to stop pigeons from getting underneath. No drilling, no glue, and no bulky finish. Just a smart, low profile barrier that helps protect solar panels from nesting birds, noise, mess, damage and those costly maintenance headaches 🐦🚫

The corners are tidy, with no gaps left for determined birds to investigate. Gareth has also gone the extra mile around the brackets, thoughtfully adding a smaller piece of Jaws to close the hole. While it is very unlikely a pigeon could squeeze through a gap like this unless it was over 50 mm, it is always better to be safe than sorry, especially when access to the panels is tricky once the job is complete.
