👋 Meet Alison, our new Senior Bookkeeper!

Alison recently joined the Defender team and will be coming in a couple of days each week, shadowing Sue and learning the ropes before Sue retires.

Devon born and bred, Alison is married with two sons. When she is not keeping the figures in order, she sings with Rock Choir, enjoys days on the beach and occasionally even braves a spot of sea swimming! 🌊

Alison says she already loves the Defender family business, everyone’s passion and our “vibrant” vibe. We are definitely taking vibrant as a compliment… although she has only just arrived! 😂

We are delighted to have her with us and are sure many of you will get to meet her soon. Please join us in giving Alison a very warm welcome to the Defender family 👏

W&W Cleaning Services Ltd have entered our July Installer of the Month with this thorough pigeon proofing job in Oxford 🐦🏠

This small roof had become an ideal nesting spot for pigeons. The surrounding wall offered shelter from the elements, while the higher ridge tiles provided the perfect lookout point for spotting food and keeping watch for predators.

Before fitting Defender Bird Spikes along the ridge tiles, the team:

🧹 Cleared bird droppings from the gutters
🦠 Disinfected the affected area
✨ Cleaned the roof and surrounding render
🐦 Installed Defender Bird Spikes to prevent pigeons from returning

Good preparation is an important part of any bird proofing installation, and W & W Cleaning Services made sure the area was properly cleaned before the spikes were fitted.

Thank you for choosing Defender Bird Spikes and for entering our July competition 👏

If you are in the Oxford area and need help cleaning or bird proofing your property, get in touch with W & W Cleaning Services.

Two jobs entered into Installer of the Month from Henrie at Vanishpestcontrol showing how a combination of Defender Bird Spikes can be used to protect very different buildings 👏🐦

For the first job, Henrie proofed a shop frontage using several different spike systems, each chosen to suit the area being protected.

Defender Gull Spikes were installed across the thick ledge in front of the gutter valley. Their extra long pins provide excellent coverage across this wide area, helping to prevent birds from landing and fouling around the guttering.

Our lightweight Defender Narrow Stainless Steel Spikes were simply secured to the lights using cable ties, while spikes were also fitted to the signage, architectural ledges and every other available perching spot.

On another property, Henrie installed Defender Bird Spikes along the parapet walls and fabulous Dutch gables. These decorative gables feature flowing, curved sides and ornamental details, creating plenty of inviting places for birds to land.
Two or three rows of spikes were carefully installed across the wider sections, with the architectural ledges along the frontage also protected. This will help prevent birds from roosting on the building and reduce the accumulation of droppings on the pathways below, where they could create an unsightly mess and a potential slip hazard.

Two very different buildings and two carefully planned installations. Great work, Henrie, and thank you for choosing Defender Bird Spikes and sending in your entries! 👏

If you are in Newcastle upon Tyne and need help with proofing against pigeons, give Henrie at Vanish Pest Control a call to sort you out once and for all.

If the ball cannot get through, the pigeon can't either 🐦☀️

Richard from West Wales Pest Control giving us a quick on site demo showing how to use the 50 mm tester ball supplied with every Defender Jaws® order.

The tester ball is a simple but really useful way to check whether the gaps around a solar panel array have been properly proofed. It represents the size of gap a pigeon may be able to squeeze through, giving installers a quick and practical check before they leave site.

This is especially helpful around brackets, corners and awkward edges, where small gaps can sometimes be easy to miss.

Defender Jaws® is designed to clamp straight onto compatible 30 mm and 35 mm solar panel frames, helping create a neat, secure barrier to stop pigeons getting underneath the panels, with no glue and no clips.

The 50 mm tester ball adds another layer of confidence to the finished job. A quick check, a tidy result and one less chance for a determined pigeon to find its way back under the array.

Huge thank you to Richard from West Wales Pest Control for the brilliant demo 🌟

When bird spikes meet high fashion… 🖤✨

Earlier this year, fashion student Zoë Anastasia from Bath Spa University contacted us with a rather unusual request. She wanted to use Defender Bird Spikes in her final collection, Forgive Me Father.

Naturally, we were intrigued!

Holly and Kursty both come from artistic backgrounds and are always keen to support the arts, especially when someone is experimenting with unexpected materials. After a good rummage around the warehouse, we found the metal based spikes Zoë needed and sent her around 40 metres, along with a toy pigeon for moral support in the studio 🐦

Zoë painstakingly linked the spikes together to create an incredible shell over a leather dress. But she did not stop there. Defender Bird Spikes also appeared on a steel cage and the sleeves of a leather shrug, transforming something designed to deter birds into sculptural, wearable art.

The finished collection was inspired by the idea that fashion can sometimes be uncomfortable, restrictive or even painful, yet still feel worthwhile as a form of self expression. Zoë’s imaginative use of shape, structure and unconventional materials brought that idea brilliantly to life.

Although the collection was understandably considered a little too hazardous for the main Graduate Fashion Week catwalk, Zoë’s work was selected for exhibition and she received a Highly Commended award in the Constructed Textiles category. The industry judges were apparently amazed by the bird spikes, too!

Her collection has since opened up further opportunities, including the chance to appear in a performance catwalk in Soho.

We are incredibly proud to have played a small part in helping Zoë bring her vision to life. It is certainly not what we originally designed our spikes for, but we absolutely love seeing creativity take flight! 🖤👏

Congratulations, Zoë. We cannot wait to see where your wonderfully unusual ideas take you next.

Another brilliant July Installer of the Month entry, this time from the team at Leading pest solutions 👏🐦

They have used Defender Wide Plastic Pigeon Spikes to protect several of the pigeons’ favourite perching spots on this property, including the roof ridge, television aerial and chimney stack.

The wide curved ridge tiles required a double row of spikes, installed with the pins overlapping to ensure there were no comfortable gaps for pigeons to land. This is exactly the sort of careful placement we love to see.

Defender Wide Plastic is one of our favourite spikes. The flexible polycarbonate pins have a natural spring to them, helping to discourage birds without bending out of shape. When installed in the UK, they also come with a 15 year material warranty.

Their lightweight construction makes them particularly useful for aerials, as they deter birds from perching without disrupting the television signal 📺

The team also remembered the chimney stack, another popular lookout point where pigeons can leave fouling on the roof, block gutters and create ongoing cleaning and maintenance costs.

Thank you to Leading Pest Solutions for choosing Defender Bird Spikes and for tagging us in this excellent installation 📸

For help with perching pigeons in Hornchurch, Upminster and the surrounding area, give the team at Leading Pest Solutions a call and get the problem sorted once and for all.

Another fantastic July Installer of the Month entry, this time from Danny and the team at Summit Pest Control 👏🐦

Ahead of the Dunelm store opening, the Summit team worked through the night to complete essential bird proofing on the newly refurbished shopfront.

They fitted Defender Wide Stainless Steel Spikes with excellent attention to placement. The outer pins sit just over the edge of the ledge, leaving birds no room to gain a foothold at the front of the building. This helps prevent fouling from landing on the signage, pathways and entrance below, keeping the newly refurbished shopfront clean and welcoming for customers.

We also really appreciate the thoughtful decision to leave space behind the spikes where birds can perch without causing damage or interfering with the front of the building. Effective bird control is all about protecting the areas that matter without proofing more than is necessary.

And can we just take a moment to appreciate these photos? The spikes look rather spectacular lit up against the night sky, although we may be slightly biased! 🌙✨

A fantastic effort from everyone involved and another job completed to a very high standard.

Thank you to Danny and the Summit Pest Control team for choosing Defender Bird Spikes and for sending us these brilliant photos 📸

This July Installer of the Month entry comes from Hayle in Cornwall and a familiar face, previous winner Scot from Duchy Pest Control 👏🐦

Scot has completed a lovely installation of Defender Curved Ridge® Spikes to deter gulls from perching along the ridge of this domestic property.

Gulls are naturally drawn to high vantage points where they can watch for feeding opportunities and stay safely away from predators. Defender Curved Ridge® has 304 grade stainless steel pins standing 15 cm high, designed in relation to the length of a gull’s legs so it can no longer comfortably stand on the ridge. Not only that, it comes with a 25 year 'No Rust' material warranty.

The base also features integral curved stabilisers. These keep each strip sitting centrally on the ridge and stop determined gulls from pushing the spikes over while the silicone is curing.

Scot also completed a couple of smaller jobs using Defender Thistle and Defender Wide plastic on some window ledges. They were particularly wide, so he used several rows to stop those pesky pigeons.

A beautifully neat installation, although with views like these, it is not exactly a bad place to spend the working day! 🌊☀️

Thank you to Scot for choosing Defender Bird Spikes and sending in these fantastic photos.

For professional gull and bird proofing in Hayle and the surrounding areas of Cornwall, Scot at Duchy Pest Control is your man.
