The “bell” is a small steel plate with a 3/8-inch (about 9.5 mm) hole in the centre; when a pellet passes cleanly through, it strikes a lever that rings a bell — hence the name.
So in the sport’s early days, a successful shot wasn’t just seen on a card — the whole room heard it ring out across the pub! 🍻🔔
