Half the world’s population has a period. So why is it still something we whisper about? 🩸

A period is just the body shedding the uterine lining it built up that month in preparation for a potential pregnancy. No fertilised egg? The lining goes. That’s it. That’s the biology.

It lasts 2 to 7 days on average. The typical blood loss is around 30 to 60ml - roughly 3 to 5 tablespoons, and it happens, on average, 480 times in a person’s lifetime.
480 times and we still can’t talk about it openly.

PCOS has a new name and the reason it needed one tells you everything about how badly this condition has been misunderstood.
After 14 years of work across six continents, it’s now officially PMOS - Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome. Published in the Lancet this week.
The old name pointed everyone at the ovaries & at cysts that, in many cases, aren’t even actually cysts. While the real condition was quietly affecting hormones, metabolism, skin, mental health, and long-term risk of diabetes and heart disease.
Women were told they didn’t look like someone with PCOS. Told it didn’t matter unless they wanted babies. Told not to gain weight, by the very condition that makes that harder than almost anything else.
170 million women worldwide. Decades of misdiagnosis, dismissal, and being sent away with the wrong answers.

The name change happened because patients demanded it. They showed up, they pushed, and they didn’t stop.
Full implementation won’t happen until 2028 but it’s happening.
