At this time of year we get a lot of calls about 'wasps' around properties. In most cases, what people are seeing is actually bees β and knowing the difference matters. π
Wasps are currently still setting up their nests, so if you're seeing something flying around your walls or roofline right now, it's much more likely to be one of these:
MASONRY BEES
π Similar in size and shape to wasps, which is why they're so often mistaken for them
π Completely harmless β stingers are generally not strong enough to pierce human skin
π Short life cycle of around 6 weeks, gone by early June
BUMBLE BEES
π If you're seeing what looks like wasps flying around the top corner of your property near the guttering, or in and around a bird box, these are almost certainly bumble bees
π Friendly and will only ever sting under direct threat
π Usually gone by mid to late-June
HONEY BEES
π A large swarm or cluster settled on a structure will usually be honey bees
π They can sting but are generally not a threat when they've split from a hive
π A local beekeeper will remove a honey bee swarm free of charge β and we can arrange this for you at no cost
WASP NESTS
π We won't begin to see active wasp nests until around mid-June, through until October
π You'll typically notice wasps entering and exiting a specific spot, or a visible nest in a garage, shed or similar structure
π Wasps will sting when disturbed and should be left well alone until treated professionally
Please don't pay any pest control company to treat or kill bees. Most reputable local companies will give you the same advice β but some will treat unnecessarily rather than be straight with you. We will never treat bees. π
If you're not sure what you're looking at, give us a call and we'll talk it through β no charge, no obligation.
