Three witnesses at Parliament's wildfire inquiry, none of them with a stake in grouse shooting, were asked what turns a moorland fire into a disaster. All three gave the same answer: fuel left to build up.

The National Fire Chiefs Council told MPs that rewilding and rewetting peat can raise wildfire risk. Vegetation grows over old firebreaks and feeds "larger wildfires that are more difficult to contain."

That warning lands as firefighter numbers sit 25% below 2008, some 11,000 posts gone, while call-outs keep rising.

Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue, who fought Saddleworth Moor, want maintained fuel breaks kept on the highest-risk ground. Yorkshire Water, the 16th largest landowner in the UK, points to rising fuel from restoration and less grazing.

Different witnesses, same culprit. The only open question is whether Parliament acts before the next big fire.

Well this office space isn’t being used in the foreseeable future…all the plasterboard & insulation has had to be removed see the extent of the problem and quite a bit of stud work will need replacing, along with electrical work before the space can be used again…all this done by nesting Squirrels!!
They may look cuddly but do serious damage to property!!…
Don’t let them land you with an unexpected bill for property repairs!
