Right, let us talk about THIS thing. ๐Ÿ˜

A BMW iX in Phytonic Blue Metallic just left the Detail My Car studio looking absolutely MINT โ€” and honestly, if you haven't seen this colour in person, you are missing out. It's one of those shades that shifts and shimmers depending on the light. Electric blue, teal, deep ocean... all in one. Stunning doesn't quite cover it.

But here's the thing โ€” it arrived with a face full of light swirls and fine scratches dulling that gorgeous paint. A crime, frankly. Time to fix that. ๐Ÿ”ง

Here's how we do it at DMC:

First up, full inspection โ€” we get eyes on every panel under proper lighting so we know exactly what we're dealing with. Then it's into a thorough decontamination: iron fallout remover, clay bar, the works. No shortcuts, no quick rinse and hope for the best.

Next, the fun bit โ€” machine polishing. We worked through the paint correction process to pull out those swirls and scratches, leaving the finish clean, clear and full of depth. This is where the real difference is made. โœจ

Once the paint is sorted, every panel gets wiped down with professional grade panel wipe to strip any remaining residue and make sure that surface is completely clean before coating goes anywhere near it.

Then we sealed the whole thing in a 5-Year Ceramic Coating. That's long-term protection, a properly hydrophobic finish (water just begs to leave the surface ๐Ÿ’ง), and a gloss level that makes this blue absolutely pop.

Final inspection โ€” because we don't just wave it off. Every panel checked, every angle looked at.

The result? Phytonic Blue doing exactly what it was born to do. ๐Ÿ”ตโšก

Mercedes E43 AMG back in for a refresh with our customer currently unable to clean it due to the hose pipe ban.

We gave the car our usual clean, chemical decontamination by way of tar and fallout removal before also repolishing the bonnet due to some bird lime damage and marks we wanted to remove. The bonnet was then recoated and the car all collected the next day.

The BMW M2 in Portimao Blue is BACK in the detail bay, looking absolutely stunning after its maintenance clean and stone chip repair. ๐Ÿ”ต

We originally prepped and ceramic coated this car from new, so we know every inch of it. And thanks to the hosepipe ban? The owner couldn't wash it themselves. Silver linings and all that. ๐Ÿ˜„

Our gentle DMC maintenance clean plus light chemical decontamination unclogged the ceramic coating and brought everything back to that fresh-from-new finish. Every. Time.

Got a coated car that's due some love (or a hosepipe ban you're blaming)? Drop us a message and let's get it booked in.

๐Ÿงช **Tar & fallout removal** โ€” because paint deserves better
๐Ÿ’จ **Carbon deposit removal on the exhaust tips** โ€” yes, we actually cleaned those
๐Ÿ”ต **Wheels cleaned inside out** โ€” and yes, we used acid. We're detailers. We know what we're doing. Proper wheel cleaning acid, properly used. The results speak for themselves.

๐Ÿ–ค **Ceramic trim coating on all exterior plastics** โ€” locked in, protected, looking sharp

The "hose pipe ban" detail is our maintenance package for when your car needs a proper reset โ€” and this Mini got the full DMC attention it deserved. ๐Ÿ™Œ

The longest post we've ever made....

This should probably go on our website but who really views a website these days?

If you have time and want to understand what detailing a brand new car consists of and why we do what we do please sit back and give us 5-7mins of your time to have a read of this, it not no offence taken at all and there is a short version below ๐Ÿ˜‚

Here we go......

Your Brand New Car Isn't As Perfect As You Think โ€” And Your Dealer's Protection Package Won't Fix It

This brand new Renault 5E is my parents new car, in pop yellow with factory-fitted red roof decals. Absolutely stunning little car. Before they collected it, they did something most people would never think to do โ€” they specifically asked the dealer NOT to do any prep work or apply any protection package. Just remove the transport coverings and hand it over.

Why? Because we wanted to document, properly, exactly what condition a brand new car actually arrives in before anyone touches it.

What we found might surprise you. Or, if you've been following this industry for a while, it absolutely won't. ๐Ÿ˜„

"But It's Brand New" โ€” The Biggest Myth in Car Care

Here's the thing that nobody tells you when you're sitting in that showroom signing paperwork and handing over a serious chunk of money: your brand new car has already been on quite a journey before it gets to you.

It's been built in a factory. It's been transported โ€” very often by train, by boat, and by road โ€” to a distribution centre, then to a dealer, and then it's sat on a forecourt. And at every stage of that journey, things happen to the paint that your dealer's "new car protection package" doesn't account for. At all.

Let us show you exactly what we found on this Renault 5E.

What We Actually Found on a Brand New Car

Light marks and swirl marks across the paintwork.

Before you blame the factory (though some of it is absolutely from there), here's something worth understanding. Your dealer has delivery after delivery coming in. They're prepping 20+ cars quickly โ€” removing transport coverings, wiping off adhesive and sticker glue residue. They're not doing it with a dedicated, clean detailing cloth on each car. They're doing it fast, because they have to. The result? Light scratches and swirl marks in your fresh paint before you've even driven it off the forecourt.

Nobody is doing this maliciously โ€” they're just working at the pace a busy dealership demands. But the result on your paint is the same regardless of intent.

Metal particles (fallout / rail dust) embedded in the paint.

This one is a known issue in the detailing industry and it's something 99% of people โ€” and most dealers โ€” never address. When a car is transported by train or boat, microscopic metallic particles from the tracks, the rail environment, or transport ship infrastructure become embedded in the paint and glass. You can't see them with the naked eye. You can't wash them off. But they are there, slowly oxidising under the surface of your paintwork and causing long-term damage.

Does your dealer's protection package include a specialist chemical process to remove these? Almost certainly not. We'll come back to that. ๐Ÿ˜

Glue residue and tar contamination.

Transport vehicles use protective adhesive films and coverings. When these are removed โ€” and especially when the residue is wiped off quickly โ€” sticky contamination bonds to the paint surface. Add to that the tar picked up during road transportation, and you've got a chemically contaminated paint surface that needs proper decontamination before any coating is applied.

So What Does the Dealer Actually Do?

Here's where we have to be honest with you, because we think you deserve the straight truth rather than a polished sales pitch.

Most dealer "new car protection packages" involve washing the car and applying a coating โ€” often sealant, sometimes marketed as a ceramic coating โ€” on top of whatever contamination, swirl marks, and metallic particles are already sitting on the paint.

That's it. That's largely what you're paying ยฃ400โ€“ยฃ900 for.

They're not doing a multi-stage chemical decontamination. They're not claying the paint. They're not inspecting under specialist lighting and machine polishing out the marks before coating. They're washing and coating โ€” and locking whatever is already on the paint underneath that "protection" for however long the coating lasts.

We're not saying everyone at every dealer does a terrible job. But the process simply doesn't allow for the level of preparation that a professional detail does. And when you understand the preparation we do before applying any coating, the difference becomes very hard to ignore.

The Detail My Car Process: What a Professional New Car Detail Actually Looks Like

This is exactly what we did on this Renault 5E. Step by step. No shortcuts.

Every professional detail begins with a thorough pre-wash process โ€” snow foam pre-soak to lift loose dirt and grime, a hot pressure wash rinse, and a careful hand wash using pH neutral shampoo. These aren't the stages that differentiate us; they're simply the foundation that any good wash should start with. After that thorough pre-wash process, we move into the specialist stages that separate a professional detailer from a dealership prep team.

1. Bleeding Fallout Remover

This is the first question we'd ask any dealer selling you a protection package: do you even have fallout remover, and do you use it on every car?

A specialist chemical fallout remover (we use a "bleeding" formula โ€” it literally turns purple/red as it reacts with metallic particles) is applied across the entire car. It chemically breaks down and dissolves the iron particles embedded in the paintwork from rail and road transport. You can actually watch it work โ€” the colour change tells you exactly how contaminated the surface is.

Skip this step and every particle that's sitting in that paint gets sealed under your coating. Your "protected" paint is now sitting on top of embedded metal that will continue to oxidise. Not ideal.

2. Tar and Adhesive Remover

A dedicated chemical tar and glue remover is then applied to dissolve sticky residues โ€” the adhesive from transport films, any road tar contamination, anything that chemical decontamination can lift before we touch the paint with anything physical.

This matters because if you try to clay or polish over sticky contamination, you're either trapping it or dragging it around the paint. You need to chemically break it down first.

3. Clay Bar / Full Paint Decontamination

Once the chemical stages are done, the entire car gets clayed. Clay barring removes any remaining bonded surface contamination โ€” the microscopic stuff that the chemical stages loosened but didn't fully remove, plus anything else that's sitting on the clear coat surface.

This is a critical step. You should never machine polish a car that hasn't been properly decontaminated. If there are particles on the surface and you run a machine polisher over them, you're dragging grit across your paint. The clay stage ensures the surface is genuinely clean before any machine work begins.

4. Paint Inspection Under Multiple Lighting Conditions

With the car fully decontaminated, we get under the lights. Proper inspection lighting โ€” multiple angles, specialist LED and halogen โ€” to identify every mark, swirl, and imperfection in the paint.

On this Renault 5E, a car that had never been driven by its owner, we found exactly what you'd expect: light swirl marks and marks across multiple panels. Nothing dramatic โ€” but 100% present, and 100% something that needs addressing before a coating goes on.

5. Machine Polishing

Once we know exactly what we're dealing with, we machine polish. Carefully, panel by panel, removing the marks identified during inspection. This step is what transforms the paint from "new car showroom" to actually flawless.

If you're applying a ceramic coating โ€” which bonds to and enhances the paint surface underneath it โ€” this step isn't optional if you care about the result. A ceramic coating on swirled paint is a ceramic coating on swirled paint. The coating doesn't hide defects; in certain light, it can actually make them more visible by amplifying the gloss and reflectivity.

6. Professional Panel Wipe

This is one of those steps that separates people who really know what they're doing from people who are just going through the motions. Immediately before the coating is applied, every panel gets a thorough wipe-down with a high-quality panel wipe product.

Why? Because polishing leaves behind oils and microscopic residues. Fingerprints get on the paint. Any contamination between the paint surface and the coating will compromise the bond and reduce performance. The panel wipe step guarantees you're applying the coating to a genuinely clean, oil-free surface โ€” maximising adhesion and ensuring the coating performs exactly as it should.

7. Ceramic Coating Applied in Controlled Conditions

We applied a 3-year single layer ceramic coating โ€” and we do this in our controlled unit, not in a draughty car park or a poorly-heated workshop.

Temperature: 20โ€“22ยฐC. Humidity: approximately 50%.

These aren't arbitrary numbers. Ceramic coatings cure through a chemical reaction, and that reaction is temperature and humidity dependent. Apply a coating in the wrong conditions and it either cures too slowly, cures incorrectly, or develops high spots and streaks that are a nightmare to correct. Your manufacturer's warranty on a coating is also conditional on correct application conditions โ€” which is worth bearing in mind.

And the PPF

On isolated high-impact areas of the car โ€” headlights, door mirrors, the pillars, and the charge level display on the bonnet โ€” we fitted paint protection film (PPF). These are the areas most vulnerable to stone chips, abrasion, and minor impacts that a ceramic coating alone can't prevent. PPF provides a physical barrier that the coating simply can't replicate.

The Honest Conversation About Price

We'll be straight with you about the numbers, because we think honesty matters more than a clever sales pitch.

Our full professional new car detail โ€” the entire process above, including ceramic coating โ€” comes in at under ยฃ800 for a car like the Renault 5E.

Dealerships charge anywhere from ยฃ400 to ยฃ900 for their new car protection package.

The pricing overlap is real, and we understand why people look at that and think the dealer package is a reasonable option. But now that you understand what's actually included โ€” and more importantly, what isn't โ€” we'd ask you to think about that differently.

Our honest advice: either skip the dealer package entirely and get a professional detail done, or don't bother at all and just drive the car.

Those are genuinely the only two sensible choices. Because a coating applied on top of contaminated, unpolished paint isn't protection โ€” it's an expensive way to seal in the problem.

The Bottom Line

A brand new car deserves to be treated like the significant investment it is. That means understanding what it actually looks like when it arrives โ€” not what the showroom glossiness makes you assume โ€” and making sure the preparation process is done properly before anything else goes on.

This Renault 5E left our workshop looking better than it did the day it was delivered. Not because we fixed damage โ€” because we removed what was already there before anyone applied a coating over it, and we did the whole process correctly, in the right conditions, with the right products.

That's what a professional new car detail actually is. And that's the difference. The team at Detail My Car have been doing this for sixteen years โ€” and that experience shows in every step of the process.

***YOUR BRAND NEW CAR IS ALREADY DAMAGED AND HERE'S THE PROOF***

We took delivery of a brand new Renault 5E recently. Pop yellow, factory red roof decals. Zero miles on the clock.

We told the dealer one thing: remove the transport covers and nothing else. We wanted to show customers the truth.

Here's what we found on a BRAND NEW car:

โœฆ Light swirl marks and scratches โ€” the result of 20+ cars being prepped quickly, covers pulled off, glue wiped down with dirty cloths (not really the dealers fault)
โœฆ Metal particles embedded in the paint โ€” rail dust and fallout from transport by train, boat, and road. Corrosive. Invisible to the naked eye.
โœฆ Tar, adhesive and glue residue across multiple panels

This is a brand new car. Never washed. And it already needs serious decontamination work.

So what did we do that your dealer almost certainly won't?

Bleeding fallout remover to chemically dissolve those embedded metal particles. Tar and adhesive remover. Full clay bar decontamination. Paint inspection under multiple light sources. Machine polishing to remove every defect. Professional panel wipe. And ceramic coating applied at controlled temperature and humidity โ€” 20-22ยฐC, 50% humidity. Because that's when it actually bonds properly.

We also fitted PPF to the headlights, mirrors, pillars, and bonnet charge display.

Total cost? Under ยฃ800.

Your dealer wants anything from ยฃ400-ยฃ900 for their "paint protection package." Which is, in most cases, a wash and a coat. No fallout remover. No clay. No polishing (definitely no PPF) Just hope.

Our honest advice? Either skip the dealer package entirely, or get it done properly. Those are the only two sensible options.

โ€” โ€” โ€”

16 years of doing this properly.

Right, so there's a hosepipe ban. You've still got a car. And it's not going to wash itself.

Whether you're sneaking buckets from the kitchen, braving the petrol station jet wash, or carefully rationing every last drop like it's liquid gold... when it comes to drying, you can NOT afford to mess around with a rubbish towel.

Every drop of water you worked that hard to use deserves a towel that actually works.

Our DMC twisted pile super absorbing drying towels hold 10x their weight in water. You're talking whole panels gone in seconds. No streaks, no rewiping, no faff.

And right now we've got a little deal running:

**Porsche Boxster Spyder โ€” DONE! ๐Ÿ–คโœจ**

This one was an absolute pleasure to work on. We've just completed our DMC Enhancement Detail plus a 5+ year ceramic coating on this gorgeous Boxster Spyder, and the results speak for themselves.

The solid black paintwork was crying out for some love โ€” swirls, light scratches, the usual story. Check out the before and afters below and you'll see exactly what we mean. Black is unforgiving, but when it's right, it is *right*. ๐Ÿ™Œ

The front end already had PPF on, so we carefully machine polished those areas to bring everything back to a consistent, deep gloss finish โ€” then locked the whole lot down with our ceramic coating package. Paint correction + protection in one hit. Job done.

The transformation is unreal. This car is now going to turn heads *and* be an absolute breeze to keep clean for years to come. That's what we're all about. ๐Ÿ’ช
