Di Warburton • Formerly Stitchscape Stitchscape in July 2026 has stopped being a patchwork and quilting business. It's a bit scary but I've been through much scarier/harder times than this Hi.

No plans for the future, so let's see what this almost 61 year old creative woman gets up to now. I'm Diane. Stitchscape is developing. The first studio was in Newton-le-Willows and then I had one on Liverpool after I moved to the Wirral. There's still lots going on though including teaching workshops, holding sewcials and retreats. I have just taken on a new fabulous studio called The Glassroom i

n Little Neston and can't wait to get going with that. So many stitchers have to use the dining room table as their sewing space and have the hassle of tidying it up every time they have a meal and have the ironing table out in the kitchen constantly. That's not ideal, as I'm aware from personal experience! Another reason some stitchers will want to use the studio club is because they just love being around other stitchers, so that they can talk to people who 'get' what they're on about completely. We all learn and inspire each other as we all have different likes and skills. I love all kinds of stitchy fun but mostly patchwork and quilting. I seem to find myself making many wall hangings at the moment, which is probably because in the studio, I like to make projects which people can look at and maybe be inspired by and to make it clearly a happy place for stitchy escapees. My projects can include many kinds of mixed media of hand stitching, applique, machine embroidery and all kinds of fabric, beads and threads. I consider myself more of a modern quilter in my style. I absolutely love pattern and colour. I'm big into fabric designers like Alison Glass and Zandra Rhodes but I also know many British pattern designers. It's a big stitchy world. I am passionate about helping us all to make the time to be creative; to lose the fear and let go of comparison. Some of us prefer to create with the help of a pattern. Others of us like to 'free-wheel' it and the rest of us like to do a bit of a mix of both. We all need to give ourselves permission to enjoy and create. You can indeed do all that at home but when you mix that joy of creating and add some 'sewcial' group fun into the mix, you can get a great community going, which will envelop you and help you feel happy and included in this crazy busy world we live in. Sewing. Connecting. Enjoying

See you soon. Diane x

61 today.
Life is so much better than this time last year. That didn't just happen by accident.
Sewing, cake and friends on Saturday, Milton tiles in St.George's hall Liverpool, darts and eating at Liverpool Dishoom on Sunday and then spa day with my baby girl tomorrow.
I have worked hard this past year to reset myself in a way which is healthier for me. I've done feminine energy courses and said no to my business and said yes to people who light my way and I do the same for them.
Some of that was hard but hey, since when does that stop us?! We can't let it.
At this age I don't have time for things and people who drain my life. I'm here to live fully as Diane. Me. I am not a business, even if I did let me disappear into mine.
I'm not a version of me that people find more acceptable or want to mould.
I'm not the same as I was 10 years ago.
I'm not the same as I was 1 year ago.
I am way softer on myself and I plan to let that last.
I'm finding new joy.

Quilters/sewists face real misunderstanding about who they are and what we represent. Grandma skills is a phrase which irritates me, as I've been sewing since I was about 13, as have thousands of others.

People imagine quilters live these wonderfully peaceful little lives, where the biggest drama is choosing between two fabrics. They see our amazing projects such as my recent very happy finish of the wedding quilt. They mistakenly think that's all we have. Only the good bits.

The reality is we're raising families, caring for parents, running businesses, dealing with illness, grief, unexpected confrontations... and somewhere in the middle of all that, we make quilts. That's what makes them meaningful.

This post is all brought on by me being physically threatened yesterday by a woman after she skidded round a corner on a narrow country lane, nipped our wing mirror and then yelling in my face when I stopped, as she held her joint in her hand.
I could just tell you about my holiday in Norfolk and all the nice bits about celebrating my step daughter’s 30th birthday but this is the full life I lead.
When I get back to sewing it'll definitely help me process that interaction, as it helps thousands of other people. Through everything!

That double wedding ring quilt for my daughter and son-in-law is now officially finished, as it has a label.

They'll be more bothered about the sausages, bacon and milk I left in the fridge for their return tomorrow but I'm a happy mummy/quilter now.

Maybe that's my responsibilities over with now?! What do we think 🤔 😜

What am I up to now that I've closed the business?

Well, other than getting my head around it all, I'm pulling the longarm lounge apart and giving it the love it's needed for a long time. Carpet moths, mould on walls and discovering very dirty parquet are all involved. I always put the business before me or my home and/relationships sometimes. Now's my time to redress that imbalance.
I've got rid of a whole big unit off that wall, as I'm limiting my storage space, so I can't just re-fill it. I cleared off two big shelves of my table too. If there's no space for something, it'll go somewhere else, hopefully not the tip- unless it's to be recycled. And not just straight into the yurt studio.

Fancy an overlocker? You'll need to collect it if you promise me it'll get a good home 😜 Pop me a message. EDIT * this has gone now*

And here's the wedding quilt, which I proudly stood in front of to give my speech. It quilted a dream and I was surprised when I hung it on the line to see that it looks as if the rings are floating over a chequerboard. The top and bottom borders gave me a last minute issue but quick as a flash I solved it. Was it the best quilting in this project? That'd be a no but I loved the way it just came to me and I went for it - that's Diane in the room.

It took me a week to come down from the event and then I finally made the decision I've needed to for a long while. I'm closing the business. There I said it in the general public as well as my newsletter subscribers.
Oh boy.

Thanks to all those intelligent, funny, sassy women who I've had the pleasure of being around. You've grown me as a person and filled my life in a way which maybe wouldn't have happened without Stitchscape.
At this point I don't want to express all the reasons, as a) many are personal and b) several people know some of the story, which is no deep mysterious thing and c) that'll do. Just know that I gave it my all and more.
I'm listening to 'The Life Impossible' by Matt Haig and he says something which hit hard especially right now.
'There is no point in being loved if you are not understood. They are simply loving an idea of you they have in their mind. They are in love with love... To be understood. And not only that, but to be understood and appreciated once understood. That is what matters'.

I would show you my finished wedding quilt up on display at the wedding (yay!) but let's be real, these two are who you want to see. They were the best stars of their fab day.
