Ask too “SEE” their liability insurance certificate (however big or small the job is).

If a deposit is needed for materials, pay for them once they are delivered to site or even better ask for a list and order yourself. Any money you hand over ask for a written and signed receipt.

Ask for references of other work done and contact them.

On bigger jobs, agree a payment schedule and stick to it with a written agreement.

Always get 3 quotes, time consuming but worth it.

These steps do not eliminate the prospect of being caught out but they do tighten them 😊
