We still talk to a lot of people who are confused about maintenance and inspections for their telehandler, tractor, or forklift.

To be clear: they are not the same thing, and a regular service visit does not make you LOLER compliant.

Under the regulations, Thorough Examination is a separate thing. It needs to be independent of your maintenance — ideally, done by a different technician at another time.

That’s not always practical, though, so we have guidelines to help you stay compliant and safe.

This week the engineering team had the pleasure of having Ryan Wheeler of Churchill Academy & Sixth Form with them for work experience.

Ryan worked with the team carrying out servicing and Thorough Examinations on multiple types of material handling equipment.

Ryan is seen here using the teams tablet to log on to the job and enter the details of the forklift ready for its Thorough Examination.

In the second picture Ryan is using the CFTS Thorough Examination fork gauge to test the forks for wear.

In the last picture Ryan is applying a spray grease to a Reach Truck to help keep its moving parts lubricated and protected from wear.

If your lifting equipment has had an impact or overloading incident, technical modifications, or a long time out of service, you might need an extra inspection to stay compliant.

LOLER lists some “exceptional circumstances” which can affect the integrity or operation of a machine — and these can mean you need a new Thorough Examination, even if your existing report is technically in date.
