We are sold out. It has been a mad few weeks when we have sold our entire stock of H Traps in record time. Sadly we cannot get more until August. We still have plenty of spare parts - canopies and catch chambers - should you wish to keep existing units working as they should,

Thank you to all our customers for the support and apologies to those who have missed out. It’s been crazy for horseflies this June.

Not just for horseflies (top of image is the common cleg), the innocent sounding Flower Bug can take a nasty bite out of human skin. A predatory insect which normally feasts on aphids, the genus Anthocoris contains 3 similar looking species (middle and lower area of image). Fortunately the H-Trap exerts its attraction on these viscious biters just the same. It’s not just the insect that is silent but deadly. www.horsefly.co.uk

It’s not just horseflies that bite. Here a sneakier biting beastie. Much more stealthy. She can land on your skin with no sensation until the piercing mouthparts set to work. From the subfamily Chrysopinae, The Deerfly is another blood feeder. During the larval stage, which lasts one to three weeks, they feed on small creatures or rotting organic matter near or in water. They emerge as adults in late spring and summer. While male deer flies collect pollen, female deer flies feed on blood, which they require to produce eggs.

They hold their wings in a triangular shape, unlike horseflies. Don’t let them rest on you too long and alert your friends if you see one on them. They will be grateful if you give them a slap.

With this heat and humidity come horseflies. Know your enemy. Makes don’t bite, females do. Female eyes have a clear band between them whereas male eyes meet.

How close will you dare to go?

With the arrival of rains following a warm dry period and more heat to follow, we are entering peak horseflyand deer fly season. Only the females bite, animals and humans, to obtain blood. They prefer to fly in sunlight, avoiding dark and shady areas, and are inactive at night.

H-Traps work by fooling the flies into thinking they are a large animal. They quickly discover their error and take off only to be funnelled into the catch chamber. No chemicals and years of service.

H-Traps work in such a simple mechanical way. The ball heats up in the sun and the female (the biting one) horsefly mistakes this as a horse (or you). It lands on the ball, tries to bite but fails to find the blood it is looking for, takes off but is trapped by the surrounding canopy and is funnelled up into the catch chamber. Once trapped it dies through dehydration. Simple and effective.

Oh and we do ship overseas if you can’t find a local supplier. But don’t order via our website as that include UK VAT. Just email instead.
