RANT ALERT 😔 so strap in & listen up!!

99% of my customer base are absolute legends, however the 1% of you that mess me about with some of the following…

āŒ Cancel or rearrange your appointment last minute not given me time to refill that slot!!
āŒ Wasting my time with me having to chase you for payment, when job is complete.
āŒ or give me an attitude over text that you wouldn’t do if I was standing in front of you.

I treat every single customer of mine with respect & will always go over & beyond for you, however what I won’t tolerate is time wasters!! As a professional tradesman running a successful business it’s no surprise that I have a large amount of bills to pay, a family & house to provide for so please treat me with the same respect that I treat you it’s that simple!! I understand sometimes rearranging appointments have to be done because it’s circumstances that’s out of your control & I will do my best to cooperate with you but I won’t cooperate with those people that take a week to send across payment or those people that haven’t the decency to let me know in good time they need to rearrange or cancel their appointment. Moving forward you will simply be added to the DNR (Do not return) list & will have to look elsewhere for someone that’s going to tolerate your lack of respect for a professional…

Moral of the story, be a DECENT personā€¦šŸ™Œ

Everything about this picture is wrong!! šŸ™ˆ

Smoke stained glass, creosote building up inside the door, the quality of the soot that was removed from the chimney & the main cause of it all šŸ¤” the person operating it!!

All this could of been avoided by a small tweak… thankfully after a lengthy discussion with the customer & a few demonstrations she has more confidence in operating her stove now šŸ™Œ

I’m incredibly passionate about chimney sweeping and take pride in helping keep homes safe, warm, and running efficiently…. But today, oh boy am I glad to be home!! From Antrim, Lisburn, Portadown & Lurgan it was my pleasure to welcome even more new customers to the forever growing Sweep Clearly customer base, however every stove I came across today looked like they hadn’t been swept in years with the amount of soot I was removing from them & I honestly couldn’t believe that they where swept within the past 12months until I seen the paperwork from the previous sweep!! šŸ™ˆ Below is just one example of a chimney that was swept last year in Portadown, the customer has had serious issues with smoke burping back into the room. 2 black bags & a 38litre hoover bag full of soot I removed from it today!! 😔

ā€œThere’s a reason I have a lengthy waiting list & booked months ahead - reputation can’t be bought, it has to be earned.ā€ šŸ‘Œ šŸ™Œ

Hardest thing about my expertise in this field is trying to get a customer to understand that their burning habits is completely wrong… Most of the time it’s poor knowledge on the understanding of the workings of a stove, other times they generally don’t care until the damage is done to their appliance & they have to replace it with a costly bill or they are ringing the fire brigade šŸ”„

Below is a few key areas to consider…

Common signs:

* Sticky, shiny, or hardened coating on chimney walls
* Smoky smell
* Poor draft or smoke backing up
* Black flakes falling into the fireplace or stove

Common causes:

* Burning wet/unseasoned wood
* Low-temperature fires
* Poor airflow
* Infrequent chimney cleaning

Always having to clean your stove glass? Unable to see the fire burning with smoke stained glass? You my friend are using your stove COMPLETELY WRONG!! šŸ™ˆ

Stay safe… šŸ”„ šŸ™Œ

The importance of carrying this out is crucial šŸ‘Œ

Before any flue or stove is swept & serviced I always carry out a visual mirror inspection because I like to know exactly what I’m dealing with…

- Is there a liner?
- What type of soot is being built up?
- Any signs of creosote or corrosion?
- What type of rods will I use?
- What type of head will sweep the best?

These are just a few examples of what I like to know before I begin on your appliance. I will never do what most sweeps do & force an oversized brush or whip within your chimney risking of busting your flexi liner!! Most of the work I’m seeing with coming behind a lot of sweeps currently is either busted/damaged liners, chimneys half swept because they don’t assess the chimney & just force an undersized/oversized whip up there & hoping for the best with the standard of clean.

Whip heads use flexible spinning strands to break up soot and glazed creosote deposits, but they can:

- catch on damaged liner joints,
- tear weakened or corroded liners,
- pull apart poorly secured connections,
- or damage lightweight flexible liners if excessive speed or pressure is used.

Raising the standard of the sweeping industry day by day… šŸ™Œ šŸ”„

First time since starting this business up almost 8 years ago that I remembered to book off a May Day bank holiday (Woohoo) who said Men can’t be organised? šŸ¤”šŸ˜œ

As lovely as it is with having a 4month waiting time & longer come September, the downside is I have worked every bank holiday the past 8 years almost, think it’s fair to say I earned this long weekend off…

Another order of stock replenished & added to the collection, van washed & ready for the road again on Tuesday morning!! Last few remaining appointments for September… ā€œDon’t settle for less, book the bestā€ šŸ‘Œ

Have a blessed weekend everyone… šŸ™

Now that I have got a minute to myself I thought I would share a little knowledge with you all regarding ( Acid Dew Point ) within chimneys/flues…

To prevent sulfuric acid forming in a stove and chimney system, the main goal is to keep flue gases above the acid dew point so acidic vapors do not condense.

Main ways to prevent it

- Burn low-sulfur fuel

High sulfur fuels create more sulfur dioxide and sulfuric acid.

Lower-risk fuels: āœ…

- seasoned hardwood
- quality smokeless fuel with low sulfur content (if you must)

Higher-risk fuels: āŒ

- coal with high sulfur content
- petroleum coke
- wet fuel
- some low-grade solid fuels

Keep the flue hot šŸ”„ ( This is a MUST )

Cold chimneys are the biggest cause of acidic condensation.

Ways to help:

- use an insulated flue liner
- avoid oversized chimneys
- warm the flue before lighting
- avoid long slumbering burns at very low airflow
- maintain proper draft (Correct ventilation)

A properly insulated stainless liner is often the biggest improvement, double skin flues are already insulated, however either the 316L or 904L single skin, make sure to ALWAYS have the stove installer insulate it either by insulated blankets or backfill with vermiculite filling. There is numerous reasons & benefits for this.

Burn dry fuel

Wet fuel lowers combustion temperature and cools the flue.

Typical moisture target for wood:

- below 20% (aim for 15%)

Signs of wet fuel:

- excessive smoke
- black glass
- tar deposits
- strong odor
- poor heat output

Avoid continual low-temperature burning ( Smouldering )

Running a stove permanently ā€œturned downā€ creates cooler flue gases and more condensation.

Better practice:

- burn hotter periodically,
- establish a good hot fire before reducing airflow,
- avoid choking air completely.

Sweep and inspect regularly

Acid mixed with soot and tar becomes very destructive.

Regular chimney sweeping removes:

- acidic soot,
- creosote,
- moisture-retaining deposits.

The picture below shows exactly what you don’t want your chimney looking like. I know there is a lot to absorb here but if one person takes away one piece of knowledge from this then it’s worth my time… šŸ™Œ

Owning a business has given me a completely different perspective on life. It’s taught me that behind every small business is a person carrying responsibility, stress, pressure, and hope all at the same time.

When you start with very little, every small step forward means something. You learn to appreciate progress differently because you remember the uncertainty of the early days. There’s no overnight success like people sometimes imagine - it’s usually years of hard work, sacrifices, mistakes, long hours, and trying to stay positive through setbacks.

What matters most to me now isn’t just growth or success. It’s being able to look back knowing I stayed consistent, treated people fairly, and kept going during the moments when things felt difficult.

I’ll always be thankful for the support people have shown the business over the years. Without loyal customers and good people around me, none of it would’ve been possible. A lot still to achieve, but proud of the journey so far and grateful for every lesson along the way.

As we speak it’s all work during the day & revision for yet another qualification in the evenings & over the weekends, watch this space…. Another qualification incoming… šŸ™Œ
