You’re not paying for “just a chimney sweep”

You’re paying for the guy who takes every chimney problem as a personal challenge. 🔥

Why can’t I get chimney sweep this week or next week?

-Short Answer: you’ve left it too late 😬

When is the ideal time to book?

-When you’ve finished using your fire for the year.
Not before you want to use it. 🤓

*Yes! There’s a difference!* (buckle up 🤠)

You don’t wait to flush your toilet *before you need it*, leaving all the dirty stuff lingering in there and causing a smell. 😮‍💨 🚽

You flush it *after* you’ve used it, so it’s clean and fresh - ready to be used again 💩

- Why is smoke coming back into the room when I light a fire? 💨

There are a few reasons! (Sorry)

But we’ll deal with the one most relevant to Autumn. 🍂

If your chimney has been swept within the last year AND you have a cowl on the chimney, the cause would most likely be something called a “cold air plug”.

When temperatures drop suddenly, a “plug” of cold, dense air forms in the upper area of the flue causing smoke to head downwards and escape wherever it can. (The BFG sang an entire song around a similar whiz popping scenario 🤭)

Not ideal. But fairly common! And solvable 👌

Here are some things you can do to restore
balance 🧘

• Leave the stove door open for 30mins before lighting - warm air from the room will be drawn up the flue and should help equalise the pressure.

• Light a little fire using fire lighters OR a couple of tea lights - this will create gentle heat and warm the flue. You’ll also be able to see if the smoke is rising yet and if it is…

• slowly build your fire up. The key is to gradually build heat to slowly dislodge that plug.

If you use your fire fairly often, you shouldn’t need to repeat this step - the key is keeping a warm flue. If you’re a casual user, build that fire up sloooowly.

Still having trouble? Might be time to call in the pro 😉

How cute is he? Knit by one of our fabulous customers. She makes all sorts of animal characters for charity, but this little guy is obviously our favourite 😉

Currently editing our website and wondering if maybe I’m in the wrong mood to be doing this?

Or do customers enjoy the straight talk?

An extract:

DID YOU KNOW?

Every man and his dog would like their stove installed “before Christmas”.

You know what that means, right? Don't wait until September to book in for an installation. I know, September feels like “the month to get stuff done”.

May I recommend April as “the month to get stuff done”? Or May, or June. They are very nice months to be up on a roof 🙂

This week we are supporting Chimney Fire Safety Week 🔥

What’s the goal?

Whether you’re an experienced stove/open fire user or just starting out - we’ll be sharing tips and tricks to keep your fire burning safely and maintain a heathy chimney.

First up! Our very own North Wales Fire and Rescue Service / Gwasanaeth Tân ac Achub Gogledd Cymru have created an excellent page to answer questions like:

❓How Often Should you Sweep your chimney?
(Spoiler: it depends what fuel you use)

And

❓The most common causes of Chimney Fires 🤔
(Spoiler: it’s not *just* about having your chimney swept)

Grab a ☕️ and have a read, I bet there’s something you didn’t know in there…

Did you know we have a website?

Did you know that you can now book an appointment through the website??

It’s a work in progress but I’d love to hear your feedback 😃- is there anything missing? Are there any features you would like to see? Information you’re struggling to find? Let me know!

Creosote is a highly flammable, tar-like deposit in a chimney. A number of factors affect the composition of creosote, such as:

🪵 species and moisture content of the wood being burned
🔥 appliance size and operation
🎩 characteristics of the chimney and flue system
☀️ environmental conditions

Large amounts of creosote in a chimney poses dangers such as chimney fires and carbon monoxide poisoning. Find advice on how to keep yourself safe by visiting our Advice Hub 👇🔗
