Yesterday morning at around 10:35 we were called to a report of a chimney fire in Newnham Bridge. On arrival our crew discovered a well developed chimney fire that had ignited some clothing in the first floor bedroom by radiated heat through the wall.

Crews investigated further and found that the fire was spreading into the wall cavities and roof timbers so the incident commander requested another two fire crews from Cleobury Mortimer Fire Station 06P2 and Wyre Forest Fire Station .

Crews worked together to extinguish the fire in the chimney using Chimney rods and a sprinkler, while also knocking out a wall and ceiling on the first floor to reveal the timbers and damping down in the loft space.

A ladder was also pitched to the roof so that two firefighters could attack a fire that had spread into a second, adjoining chimney stack using the chimney rods from up on the roof, due to the fireplace being bricked up.

This was a very challenging incident which took 5 hours for three crews to extinguish. A crew returned later on in the evening to check everything was cooling down, where the incident was then left.

Pictured below is the chimney breast that was inside the wall cavity with a beam going into the wall, (which crews have cut off.) The fire had travelled along the timber and was spreading unseen into the roof.

This highlights the dangers of chimney fires, and serves as a reminder to get your chimney swept regularly and burn seasoned or kiln dried wood. If you think you have a chimney fire always call 999 and ask for the fire service.
