Repairing the impossible stains at Rug Cleaner.

This bokhara carpet had another wet textile bleed a very stubborn green dye into it. We can often strip migrant dyes from carpets and rugs often without removing the base colour but sometimes this isn’t always possible. So for this carpet the dye had to be aggressively removed and then recoloured again using dyes.

We use this type of colour correction whenever there is colour loss that needs replacing. It takes time but it’s worth it!

Urine stain removal and repair - Sometimes removing a stain just isn't enough. This beautiful 100% wool carpet had suffered two dog accidents leading to staining and colour loss. When you get a problem like this most people think it’s totally ruined, un-repairable and requires cutting and patching or replacing the carpet.

Well, we don’t like to cut and patch carpet! We can deal with issues like this without a Stanley blade!

These areas were decontaminated, treated for residual staining, and then came the magic. We re-dyed these areas to match the surrounding carpet colour.

We can colour repair wool, viscose, sisal, silk and a whole lot of other textiles.

If you have a seemingly impossible stain, or just need your rug or soft furnishing cleaning properly – in the right way! Call us today on 01258 837092, we are here to help and offer free advice on cleaning and stain repair.

We are currently in Turkey for work and play.

I had a marvellous day in Ankara, Turkey, yesterday with my friend Reza Nikdel, talking all things rug related, with a main focus on repair work. A great guy, I picked up some wonderful new tools, did some training on those - every day is a school day! - and had time to take a look round the historic Ankara castle.
I am planning to do some more advanced repair work with Reza in the near future as part of our ongoing training program at Rug Cleaner.

If you have a carpet that is need of repair please call us on 01258 837092.

CUSTOM DYEING - Sheepskin rugs!

At Rug Cleaner we don't just clean soft furnishings to the highest standard.

We can also custom dye rugs and soft furnishings to your specification. We just need a swatch of colour, to work from, and providing the base colour of the item you want to dye can be turned into that colour, we can change the colour for you. We use tech that tells us what colours we need to add to a base colour to make it a different colour – it’s simple but effective.

There are some perameters to take into account though. After all, we can’t turn a dark brown rug into a light pink or beige, or a bright blue to a black, but generally with sheepskins of the lighter variety, there are infinate options for colour changes right across the spectrum.

For all your carpet and rug cleaning and dyeing projects call us on 01258 837092 today for free advice.

I like to do as much training as possible to keep abreast of new developments in the marketplace, and have travelled all over the UK, Europe and beyond working and training on various projects. After all, you never stop learning!

It’s been nearly two years since I travelled to the USA to meet with Chris Howell – the world’s leading carpet and rug dyeing pioneer and instructor at Colorful Carpets LLC – and take his groundbreaking 'Colorful Carpets' training course (his American spelling of 'colourful', not mine I assure you – though literary genius I am not).

This cutting edge course has been taken by a handful of us in the UK, and opens up a whole range of possibilities when it comes to stain removal and colour repair issues, let alone general carpet and rug dyeing. It’s a real game changer for problem solving and saving carpets and rugs that would otherwise need replacing.

Re-dyeing and colour repair has been about in various forms for years in the carpet restoration industry, but never really used with such ease and spectacular results. Bleach spills and stains can be corrected to a much high standard, that wasn’t easily achievable before (if at all). With the ‘colorcue’ app available to those that have taken the training, and the versatile liquid dyes that Chris has designed, we can now repair colour issues methodically and easily by adding one colour at a time through the colour spectrum. We use this amazing system to add colour in a variety of media from syringe, brush and air brush through to a full spray application, using our new Dyebold machine. As well as spots and stains we can also offer full room dye projects and even be more creative than that.

If you have a colour issue please let us know. Even if you are a long way from us, here in Dorset, we are in touch with the few other experts throughout the UK that can help.

We love new kit. I mean we just love it! Love, love, love! If a job is worth doing it’s worth doing right so you have to have the right equipment to do it right, right? See? Simples!

Introducing the all new DyeboldTM!

Designed last year by leading carpet and rug colour repair specialist in the USA – Issa Hoker at The Rug Colorist, Florida – this small machine makes it easy to get great results for large and small dye projects. Rug overdyes, sunfade restoration and full room dyeing are made easy by the constant flow, pressure and temperature which translates as less variation in the finished dyeing. It works in tandem with our truckmount machine for a smoother more precise finish. And we are all about the best finish no matter what work we are undertaking here at Rug Cleaner we have the best tools for the job.

This small machine is easy to transport and will heat up a lot of dye, a large enough batch to do a huge room with variable pressure for different carpet types. It makes things easy and takes out many of the variables that can go wrong on a dyeing job putting the dye down evenly and consistently. This is skilled work that takes practice but this machine makes it as easy as it can possibly be.

If you are interested in having a carpet restored or unsure about any colour issue do give us a call or leave a comment below. You will be amazed at what can be done and we don’t bite and are here to help!

Here at Rug Cleaner we have a whole variety of ways to get rugs wet and a whole variety of ways to get rugs dry – and dry superfast! In fact rugs are typically dry in under an hour or two, with thicker rugs taking a short while longer. Why is this important? Well, wet fibres are bad for mould and spores (and therefore REALLY bad for our health), and also bad for the longevity of the fibres themselves – I will be writing extensively on this issue in due course.

Anyway, back on topic. It all starts with the rinsing. We always pass fresh clean water through the rug until it runs completely clear of soil and cleaning residues. To do this we typically use either (or both) an internal vacuum drying process and / or a centrifugal spinning process. For really big and thick rugs, that are too heavy or too large to go into the centrifuge when they are full of water, we use a vacuum drying system which pulls water from inside the rolled rug. The waste water runs through a sight glass so we know when the rug is completely clean and as dry as it can be. For everything else thats suitable we use the centrifuge.

Our centrifuge, built in Turkey, was the first of its kind here in the South West. It spins at 1400 rpm, forcing all the water out through the layers of the rug. But we continue rinsing at the same time, as we feed water into the machine through the centre of the carpet until we can see the waste water running clean, at which point we stop feeding water in and let the rug spin until it is virtually dry. Rugs and carpets leave the machine typically dryer than clothes out of a washing machine.

This full rinsing is something you can only get with these methods and is very important for full cleaning but also the longevity of the rug. When residues are left behind in carpets and rugs this leads to early re-soiling and wear, so it’s vitally important rugs and soft furnishings are rinsed and dried properly. This is also why we run an expensive Truckmount machine for the cleaning carpets in the home – it allows far more rinsing leaving carpets dryer, cleaner and residue free for far longer times between cleans over that of portable machines.

Once rugs are rinsed and the water removed, they are either hung or laid flat to dry completely in our large climate-controlled drying areas.

So now you know a tiny bit about our rinsing and drying process but do comment below if you have any questions.

For some projects full reconstruction of a damaged carpet isn’t always the best option.

This small project came in needing a good clean, but the fringe and adjoining area of kilim on the top and bottom of the rug – which was not an integral part of the original rug – had suffered wear. The fringe that was attached had been both stitched and glued in, which had lead to discolouration of the cotton.

To re-weave the kilim part of the fringe would have cost more than the value of the rug. Yet this piece has both sentimental and financial value and, who knows, maybe in the future it will be worth re-weaving the kilim and fringe. In the meantime, we removed the old false fringing, and replaced it with a new cotton fringe for its aesthetic value.

So what did we do? After fully cleaning the rug, the new fringe was carefully stitched in place. We don’t use any adhesives in this type of work, but repaired the kilim first (before stitching on the fringe), to make sure the rug would be resilient and hold strong.

It’s worth noting with these antique and semi antique rugs that the fringing really makes no significant difference to residual values. So conserving with a false fringe to protect the original weave is not harming the piece in any way.

If you have an issue with a carpet or rug you would like to discuss please give us a call on 01258 837092. We are here to help!
