If you've found yourself worrying more about Mum, Dad, a partner or another loved one lately, you're not alone. Many families wonder when the "right time" is to ask for help.

Often, the best time is before things become overwhelming. A little support now can bring reassurance, reduce stress and help everyone feel more confident about the future. Here’s a couple of signs that it could be a good time to start a conversation:

1. They’re not eating or drinking as well as they should: from skipping that mid-morning cup of tea to out of date food in the fridge, this is an early sign someone may be struggling with everyday self-care tasks.

2. They’re not getting out and about and seem more isolated or they’re not enjoying the activities and hobbies they used to.

3. You’re worrying more: Sometimes the biggest sign isn't about your loved one—it's about how you're feeling. If you find yourself checking in constantly, feeling anxious or struggling to balance caring with your own life, it may be time to explore some additional support.

Asking for help isn't about losing independence—it's about making everyday life easier, safer and more enjoyable. The right support can help people continue living happily in the home they love.

The warmer weather can be lovely, but it can be challenging and even dangerous for older relatives and neighbours. A quick phone call or visit can make a real difference.

If you're supporting a loved one and finding it difficult to manage the heat, here’s a few common-sense tips:

🥤Older adults and people with certain health conditions may not feel thirsty, even when they need fluids. Offer water regularly throughout the day and keep a drink within easy reach, refreshing it regularly.

☀️ Keep the home as cool as possible by closing curtains or blinds in sunny rooms during the day and open windows when it’s cooler to let fresher air in. Make sure there’s a fan available and you can even place ice or iced water in front to cool further.

🩺 Check in regularly and look out for signs someone may be struggling with the heat such as confusion, headaches or unusual tiredness. Don’t hesitate to get medical assistance if you’re concerned.
