Something we explain to a lot of new customers is that the first clean on a property that hasn't been done in a while nearly always takes more time than the regular visits that follow.

That's not us making excuses, it's just how it works. Windows that have built up a year or two of grime, hard water deposits and general muck take more effort to get right than ones that were last done six weeks ago. The first clean gets them back to a proper baseline.

After that, keeping them clean is a much more straightforward job each time. The build-up doesn't get a chance to set in, the visits are quicker, and the results are consistently better.

For most properties around here, monthly or six-weekly works well. Somewhere near a busy road or a field might need it more often, and somewhere in a quieter spot might be fine on a bi-monthly round.

You don't need to get up a ladder to get a rough idea of whether your gutters need sorting.

A few things worth looking out for from the ground.

Water spilling over the edge when it rains, not a small drip but a proper flow coming over the side. That's a fairly clear sign something's blocked.

Green or brown streaking on the wall directly below the guttering. That's usually caused by water consistently overflowing in the same spot.

Any sections that look like they're starting to sag or pull slightly away from the roofline, as that can mean they're carrying weight they shouldn't be.

Plants or moss growing visibly out of the channel. More common than you'd think, especially on older properties.

Birds spending a lot of time poking around up there, as they'll happily nest in a blocked gutter.

Conservatories are one of those things that can get really quite dirty before you fully clock it.

It tends to creep up on you. A bit of algae on the roof panels, some grime on the frames, and before long the whole thing looks a bit tired and the light coming through isn't what it was.

A proper clean covers the glass, frames and roof, outside and inside where it's safely accessible. We're not just talking about giving it a wipe over, it's getting the algae and build-up off properly so the panels are actually clear again.

We also find a lot of people are worried about the polycarbonate roof panels getting damaged. That's one of the reasons we use pure water and soft brushes rather than anything that could mark the surface.

Makes a big difference to how much light gets through, which is kind of the main point of having one 😄

A few customers have mentioned they assumed solar panels just cleaned themselves because it rains.

Rain does help with loose dust to an extent, but it doesn't shift bird droppings, pollen or the kind of general grime that builds up over time, especially if the panels sit at a shallow angle. That stuff just sits there and doesn't really move.

The reason it matters is that even a partial layer of dirt across the surface reduces how much light actually reaches the cells. It doesn't take much to start having an effect on output, and if the panels haven't been touched since installation, it can be quite a bit more than people realise.

We clean solar panels using pure water only. No chemicals, no abrasive tools. That's actually what most manufacturers recommend, so it keeps everything as it should be.

Not a job that needs doing all the time, but it's worth doing properly when it does need it ☀️

We mention fascias and soffits a lot and we're aware not everyone knows exactly what they are, so here's a quick explanation.

Your fascia is the flat board that runs along the bottom edge of your roof, the bit the guttering attaches to. Your soffits are the boards underneath the overhang, between the fascia and the wall. Together they seal off the roof edge and protect the timbers behind them from the weather.

On most modern homes they're white UPVC, and they look fine from a distance. Get a bit closer though and a lot of them have gone green with algae, or picked up black streaking from the gutters running over them.

It's one of those things that happens gradually so you kind of stop noticing. But it does make a real difference to how the front of a house looks once they've been cleaned back up.

We do them as a standalone job or alongside a window clean if it makes more sense to do everything at once 👍

One of the most common questions we get when we first start on a new property is why we're not using a bucket and squeegee.

The short answer is that tap water leaves marks. It contains minerals that dry on the glass and leave white residue. You've probably seen it on windows or shower screens before, that cloudy film that builds up over time.

We filter our water down to almost nothing, essentially stripping out everything that would otherwise leave a deposit. That water is then fed up through a pole with a soft brush head, which scrubs the glass and frames before being thoroughly rinsed off.

Because it's so pure, it draws the remaining dirt away as it dries. So the finish is genuinely clear, not just clean-looking.

The other thing people notice is we're doing it all from the ground. No ladders resting against the guttering or frames, and we can reach windows that would be difficult to get to any other way. It's a bit different to what most people expect, but it works really well.
